Group Question

How old do you think a veiled female should be and how long should she be. I have my group of four and I hope to breed them when they are 12+ months. I have a perfect male sitting in another building (Bussines Partner). My veileds are about 4-6 inches from vent to snout and I just want to know what other breeders and hobbist thinks. (Don't worry I am not turning them into egg machines) :D

Well I'm not a breeder (yet) but I agree with you that those females should be a year old before they are bred. Let them mature and finish growing. As for the SVL, most female veileds that I have seen have been about 6". How old are yours now?

Speaking of breeding: anyone have a spare female dwarf jackson's that they need to get rid of?

I agree - at least one year old before you breed them. Glad to hear about not turning them into little egg machines - they kind of do that on their own any way! ;)

My four veileds are just over 5 months old and right now they are very big, but they are not showing there adult colors right yet. I have had panther (nosy be) before and I thought I would try veileds and do an up scale breeding project. Thanks for you help.

P.S. If a female has eggs in her can you see them like a beraded dragon.

With some you can - they look and feel like little marbles. Her appetite will increase and you'll notice her putting on weight. When mine was gravid I couldn't palpate any eggs (for certain) and she was carrying 51 good sized eggs. The second time she laid 66 - I couldn't palpate any then, either, but they were VERY small eggs.

A gram scale would be a good investment. Once they've reached maturity (stopped growing) then any significant weight gain would indicate gravidity.

Wow! 5 months old and they are already 6" SVL. They are immense! Are you sure they are females?

Most adult females that I have seen tend to be a uniform emerald green, so I don't know if their colours will change too much as they grow older.

And yes Jaylyn, let me know if you hear of any female dwarf's. I'm currently trying to persuade Bob in Regina to sell me his little Cleo! Like that will ever happen!

No - not even likely!! ;)

As the veileds reach sexual maturity they will develop 'robin egg' spots on their bellies and casque. Of course they haven't finished growing at this point (some are sexually mature at three months) - so it's best to wait to breed until their bones have finished developing to prevent any problems (liken it to a 10-12 year old girl having a baby).

They are all females, my animal partner and I have a high blue male sitting on the shelf and he is 9 months old and ready to breed. But the female have tons of work to do before they breed. I just don't want them to drop egg right now and then I don't want to breed now anyway. I bring in huge orders of crickets and they are feed 50 crickets a day (25 crickets per animal. They are all dusted and the females that are very large are taking one baby pinkie mouse a week. They are eating there pothos plants and doing very well. Thanks Richard Welter

Once they develop the mating colours - you may want to reduce their intake (25 each - WOW) to delay egg laying before they are fully grown. Just curious - what are you dusting with?
