burm vet help

If anyone can help with some advice that would be great. My guy's right eye ball and right side of his head looks to be smaller then the left side. His eye looks to be sinking in and the nearest herp vet is over 500 miles away. If anyone has had this happen and can ofer advice it would be a bid help.
Also he does eat live and dead but there is not bite or claw marks around his eyes or head, I watch when he eats live to make sure he doesn't get bite, also it does look like to early signs of mouth rot.

Have you checked the sheds for the eye caps? It sounds like it might be a retained eye cap to me. Raise the temps for the mouth rot make sure the cage is dry and warm. It would be best if you could get it to a vet as soon as you can because I have seen eye caps that have been retained over and over it is quite difficult to get it off but you can try using a q tip with warm water and gently rubbing it to see if it comes off.

buddy you need a vet. Stop feeding live. Can you explain to me how you can stop your snake from getting bit or injured? An eye cap can be removed with a piece of tape but I really think you should get in touch with a vet immediately your snake probably needs antibiotic treatment. Sunrunner is right, turn up your temps and call a vet.

I ment to put it doesn't look like mouth rot and I cannot just hope in a vechile and drive 500+ miles to a vet. I have a number of a vet down in surry bc but they told me they need to see the animal. I can't stop him from getting scratched but I do watch to make sure he gets them by the head or so that the head isn't by his skin and i only feed him live when he won't eat it dead which isn't often. I really don't think there is any thing wrong with feeding live.

Have you been checking the capps mystic ? how big is your burm?

yep duct tap it works. but I dont think jus't any one should be messing with a snakes eye you have to be certain about a retained eye cap check the shed some times it looks like the eye cap has bin retained especially is ball pythons I've seen back yeard vets blind a snake because instead of removing a cap they removed the cornea infection sets in and the snake gos blind.

There is a few thing that can make the eyes bigger, retained eye cap, water between the eyes and the eyes cap or at the back of the eyes, your snake could have a low level of vitamin A in his system... And more, so stop giving him live food if he can eat dead, go see the vet, no one can give you the right diagnostic by phone or on net.

i agree with Northernsnake your burm NEEDS to see a vet...... IMHO you should seriously do some more research to find a local vet that deals with exotics if you are going to have exotic animals at least for the animals sake.....

I think that the i net idea is a good one, if it is just the eye cap maybe your vet is able to do a consultation via i net maybe with a web cam or pics? I have heard of this being done now either way phone your vet explain it to him/her and go from there because it could be a few different things.

The problem with feeding live after snakes have had dead is because they get lazy and less efficient after "killing" a few rodents that are already dead. If when he eats the prey never tries to fight back, kick, scratch, etc he WILL remember that. My biggest boa remembers it well enough he won't eat a rat unless I stop shaking it around a bit (to make him think it's real) and just set it down in front of him. He doesn't even strike any more cause he knows they're dead, but he'll eat them anyways. I realize you don't think this is your problem, but it's a problem none the less that you need to be aware of and take care of it. Just because he hasn't been hurt yet don't wait until he is hurt just to fulfill your justification to only feed him prekilled.

As far as your actual concern...can you post a picture? See if you can borrow a digital camera from a friend or ask him to come take the picture for you. Ask around cause lots of people have them and I'm sure you could find someone happy to help you.

ScreamingMisfit, I live up in a small town where snakes aren't a big pet and the town has no in town vet. I am taking him to a vet that works with reptiles in Edmonton, but that is still an fifthteen hour drive.

How long has the eye ben like that

His eye has been like that for about two weeks now. I tried t q-tip idea but not the tape. I shed my guys head and then let him do the rest to make sure his eyes shed, I am waiting to get paid before I can take him down to Edmonton. His eye looks a little better now that he is drinking more water, and his last crap looked fine to me other then it was the same size of my moms dogs. :) So hopefuly after his check-up he will get better.

Hey Kim , let me take a look at your burm . I might be able to help. give me a call when you get home , If you say the eye looks like its sinking into her head it might be mites. Its hard to tell if i can't see her, also you might need to up her food intake . Is she losing wieght? I'll get you a # to a rabbit breeder if need be . Ginger lost alot of bulk when Vals breeder rabbits died until i found another place to get food . just make sure she keeps getting lots of water , put her in a rubbermaid container with fairly warm water for a day, That clears up most bad sheds on my retic
