View Full Version : Got a hognose!
My husband arranged for me to get a western hognose today for Christmas. He's a yearling male. The cutest little guy ever. I'm already in love. Just wanted to share in my happiness!

congratz and welcome to the world of unexplained hunger strikes lol (when it happens to you[and it will] occassionally a live gerbil pink will restart them). Good luck :)
Yup, it's my first hog. My BP occasionally goes off feed so, I am so far used to a non feeder. I will certaily ask for advice if it drives me mad.
Just something funny to share. My husband isn't into herps. The only herp of mine that he would touch was a juvie leo. That only happened once. He has never held any of my snakes. When I was handling my hog prior to purchase, he looked at it and touched it's side! LOL. The very first time. Cute eh - they certainly are cute and look non-threatening.
Good thing he likes to keep me happy! He hasn't any problems at all with my keeping of them. Thanks for the comments everyone!
In my experience, when they go off feed, brumate them. They don't usually go off feed in the middle of the year. Mostly in fall, close to winter. 2 of mine are going down soon.

lets see, mine started eating in July decided brumation started in October so almost 3 months of eating this year lol.
Yikes! Were those ones males or female rev?

adult female, while she ate, she ate tons
Female huh. Both of mine which are off feed are also females. Both my males never went off feed for any prolonged period of time. Interesting. Anyone else have their female hogs go off feed?

I don't have a whole lot experience with Hoggies - I just have a single, '02 male at the moment...HOWEVER...,
... I have noted that the little guy will suddenly go off his feed for several weeks at a time, during any season of the year (even mid-summer), so in my case it does not seem to be season-oriented.
However, having a fair amount of experience with other snakes which have given me feeding "problems" over the years, I no longer become upset when a snake goes off, as long as it's looking okay and isn't losing too much body-weight (I've had
boids
go off feed for over a YEAR, with seemingly no ill effects).
It comes down to a judgement call by the keeper whether or not to do anything about it.
Cheers!
Simon
