View Full Version : What camera
I know this has probably been posted a thousand times but I need info from all you picture takers. I'm in the market for a good digi that will be used mostly to take pictures of my snakes. It will be used for normal human photography as well but mainly for my herps. I was wondering if you all would give me suggestions on which cameras you like and their approximate prices. Thanks for any help!!

Well, it really depends on how much you want to invest.
I love the olympus c4000 and c750 ultra zoom. they range around 450 for the 4000 and 600 for the 750 ultra zoom.
In my opinion, if you want to invest in a really good camera, go for the olympus c 5050 zoom (around 700 us) but the best one I have used yet.
There is also the nikon coolpix 5400.
Still expensive,
if you want less expensive ones, I would suggest
fugifilm finepix 3800 or the nikon coolpix 4300. they are under 500 us.
I love olympus for their battery life, very good and the pics are awesome, although some will say they aren't easy to use, not point and shoot.

I will suggest Nikon CoolPix 2100 or 3100. 2 MP & 3 MP respectively.
The 2100 sells for $162, and the 3100 sells for $250.
These are great cameras because they have a great macro feature.
I would also recommand The panasonic FZ1 (2 MP) or the FZ10 (4 MP), if you want to spend a little more money. These cameras are equiped with a 12X Zoom Leica Lens and have a 3X digital zoom to to add for greater distance.
I suggest that you check out ZDNet at www.zdnet.com. Just click on 'Reviews & Prices' and then under 'Digital photo & Video' click Latest camera reviews (http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Digital_cameras/4502-6501_16-0.html?tag=ont-newc&qt=&sort=asc&orderby=-7relDte) .
They also show you where you can purchase the camera and which store is the cheapest. All you have to do is type in your zip and they calculate the shipping cost & the camera cost for a grand total. Just click on the price header and it will sort it form cheapest to most expensive. They also rate their stores to make sure that you get a good supplier.
I've purchaced everything from printers to MP3 players on that site.
Thank you for your replies everyone.

My camera of choice is the Nikon 5400. Nikon in my opinion has the best macro that I have used, and I seem to always get great macros with the camera. It is more expensive, but in my opinion a great tool in this hobby for getting great pictures.
here are a couple of pics I have taken.

Sony DSC 717 5.0 is an ill cam, but it's over a grand. Personally I think Its the best camera out there(as far as digi's go), and will be good for many years to come. So if you want to buy something highend this is the way to go.
Cannon also has nice cams at a good price.
