Right on Sunrunner! Good for you!
I was also a smoker for a long time... 14 years. I quit 6 months ago, and have never looked back. I have a very addictive personality as well, so if I can do it, anyone can.

I have been quit for over 1 year, just threw my last smokes and lighter out the window of a moving car. I had been smoking for about 4 years, but I was up to about 4-5 packs of them a day. I went to www.quitnet.com and the people there helped me to quit.

I have smoked, quit, smoked, quit, smoked and quit some more. Honestly, I love to smoke, but I do hate the ill problems that come with it. Good luck at your quitting....hope it takes.

oh no, we have a cigg here called sweet cherry dreams.........when you light them they smelled like cherry's, and it left a cherry taste on your lips.....that was smoking....hmph....anyways......I personally still have cravings for them.....
Yes they do stink *no offence* my family sent me a package and when we opened it up I swear I seen the smoke just roll out of there, plus we had to wash what was in there........eck. It don't help that we work in a hotel and always have to clean the smoking rooms....gross.....and I could go on about chew!

Well, all this talk of smoking really makes me feel like stepping outside and having one. I think I will!
Yeah, that's right, I haven't quit. Wanna see something really scary? Me, after being denied nicotine for 24 hours! I don't think the world is ready for me to quit yet.

No whats scary is that a baby can be born born addicted to nicotine. It's like a lessor form of a crack baby, a nicotine baby. Thats scary, so is being eaten from the inside out, I can deal with a person that is a b**ch from nicotine with drawls, I can't deal with anything I've said above.

I'm with Wuntu Menny. I hulk out if don't get my fix after so many hours. Especially if I've been worked up. There's just something about that nicotine spike right in the base of my skull that keeps me from quitting. Sorta like I'm being plugged into my own personal Matrix. ;)

I've used to smoke for about 4 years from about 14 - 18. Never got addicited tho. I'm 23 now and pick them up and put them down whenever I want. I only smoke when on Vacation or when drinking heavly and since both only happen a few times a year, I'm not to worried about giving it up completly.
the last time I quit wasn't so bad, I didn't turn into a total bitch even though people were waiting for me to go postal, but i was really nasty to people the time before.... I think I scared a few of the people calling me for tech support. I screamed at some guy for using the wrong mouse button. He didn't make that mistake twice. Wish i could get away with screaming at all the people calling me for help.
That's great! I like hearing those stories much better, there are too many people out there that say "I can't". It's simply not true.
I became a regular smoker by the age of 13 and eventually found my way to 3 packs a day  I eventually severe breathing problems (unsure what caused them or what they even are... had every test under the sun done  ) which prompted me to quit a few years ago. My parents used to make jokes that my car wouldn't start without a cigarette, or my voice needed a cigarette to startup when talking on the phone and stuff like that. I pretty well always had a smoke going, and couldn't manage to get anything done without one. Like Kim, I actually enjoyed it as well as it being a habit. That makes it all the more difficult. So if people like us can quit, anyone can ;)

The $10/pack that cigs cost in Alberta was more than enough motivation for me. Not to mention the herps. :)

I agree with invictus, not so expensive here, but expensive enough when you don't get paid alot. When your a smoker your body heat is actually lower, your immune system is weaker, and you get sick more often. My partner gets brohnchitas (Sp?) EVERY year because she used to smoke clove's (eck, I could not stand those, it was like taking rough sand paper and rubbing it on my throat). She was like you Vengance, She could pick them up or put them down, didn't matter. But because of our animals and herps she leaves them alone.....

Also it was harder now then ever as well to smoke you cant smoke in restaurants, bars, coffee shops, I felt so stupid when I was out with my family having dinner and in the middle of it going outside for a smoke. I did not smoke in my house as well so it got a little crappy always going out side for a smoke in the middle of winter too :P
But the deciding factor was i sat there one night and thought **** I am paying someone(alot of money too) to kill me it is very stupid :)

Odd thing is that the human body gets over any nicotine addictions rather quickly, usually about 3 days. It is that deep down personal desire that makes you want to take the butt to your lips again.
At this moment I am rolling my own smokes (as I cough away), hehe...so much cheaper and kinda a bit artistic. Anyhow, I think the overall desire to quit has to be true...or else it just aint gonna happen. My mom quit 'cold-turkey' and has only smoked 2 smokes in the last 8 years (due to me visiting after 3 years and having a few drinks..:D). Once you realize what you spend, it makes it a bit easier. Take a jog a month after, you'll notice your lungs are clearing out the ol' junk as well. I think when you notice the lil' changes like that you feel a bit better about your choice.

actually being addicted to nicotine is usually like being an alcholic, you will always have the cravings. I used to do R.Y.O's to, but still to expensive (crappy job). Sometimes it's not always a personal desire, you can stop for other people, or even animals. I quit mainly to be healthier for future children and for my animals and reptiles.

I quit 2yrs ago this coming New Yr.
I had smoked for 14yrs.
I have 2 daughters.
When my first was born, I occassionally smoked around her, in the house.
She had HORRENDOUS ear infections and chest infections and in the end had to have the tubes put in her ears..
I made a rule of no smoking in the house.
My second daughter, I NEVER smoked in the house.
She has had 1 ear infection in 3.5yrs.
One effect of second hand smoke is ear infections, and chest infections.
I put two and two together.
I quit inadvertantly. I had not set out to quit. It happened due to some serious problems I had, leaving me couchbound for about 2months. Since I could not get up, I could not smoke. Plus the reasons I could not get up were the only things on my mind. I did not even think about cigs. I couldn't.
I have NOT started again because, I want to be a good role model for my kids, my hubby has never smoked, it's expensive, and I have health issues at the moment that smoking would not help.

Smokeing is like any addiction if the person isn't ready to quit, no matter how much you try and get them to quit, it's not going to happen. They have to do it on their own.

Everyone always said it took away your sense of taste and I didn't believe them, I thought everything tasted just fine  LMAO... I quit smoking and all of a sudden I was like "What the hell is wrong with this, it isn't supposed to taste like that!" "Whoa this tastes strange" HAHAHA everything was sooo different :p

It is actually a myth that it takes nicotine only 3 days to not be in your system anymore, I have talk to my doctor about this because I was curious about it, it actually takes almost 6 months for it to be out of your blood, but the withdrawl I think calms down after about a week.
Geez for those who are trying to quit think about it... if not for the health, for the money.... ok avarage what is it $9.00 a pack, the avarage smoker smokes 1 pack a day, so thats $63.00 a week $252.00 a month so aprox $3024.00 a year all to give your self cancer or enphzima <--spelling (which my mother passed away from 2 years ago) she smoked 2 packs a day died at 50 yrs old could you imagine leaving your children or loved one at 50 because you wanted a smoke?? Anyways back to the money ;) think of what you could buy for 3 grand ....a pair of albino boa's .... an albino ball python.... a bunch of het pretty much anything.... think of the possibilities :) a very cool room or enclosure for them all ;) a big screen tv, a home theater system ... sheesh the list is endless. Point is dont pay the Tobbaco companies to KILL you.

Oh boy did you hit it on the head, I have the same problem. I recently quit, and I'm hoping this is the last time because I'm so prone to relapsing. Good luck with it Sunrunner and stay strong! :)

Congratulations to all who have quit!
My last smoke was July 3/03 (day of my kidney transplant), and I haven't touched one since. I smoked since I was 14. I managed to quit cold turkey after more than 10 years. :)

I was actually speaking of your bodies addiction for nicotine. Your body rids the many toxins at different levels as well, depending on your metobolism, diet, etc etc.
I dont spend very much on tobacco. I buy 'rollies', at about $2.50 for a pouch, and lasts me about 4-7 days. Average pack of 'top shelf' smokes here are from $3.40-5.00. But, for what some folks pay I would rather spend a few bucks more on other smokables...heh. Like my dad always told me, smoke em' if ya got em'... Still, in the end, it is a bit of money that goes into smokes and would not be bad to see some bigger, nicer cages holding bigger and nicer herps!

Congratulations
I've smoked on and off for about 7 years(mostly on). I've quit a few times for a couple months but thats as close as I've got. A few things I've learned through experience are physical activity helped relieve my urges(a boxing bag was most helpful). Another was to avoid drinking which is hard when you live in Thunder Bay and have all alcoholic friends. This thread has motivated me to attempt to quit for the 617th time.
I think it would be great if everyone shared the method(s) they used to quit.
I found 2 days, then 2 weeks and then 2 months all times that were difficult for me...

1 day, 1 week, 1 month,1 year were all difficult for me, still are, I still crave cigs so badly. It's just somthing you do. There are so many "stop smoking" things out on the market you can try them all if you need to.

Just quit ... think to your self would you like your daughter or son smoke? if not .... why?
Then you have your reason for quitting :)
