Hello everyone! Just wondering if anyone here has had any bad experiences using pine/spruce shavings as a substrate for snakes.

Just use aspen and save yourself the headache. Conifers have way too many extractives and resins in their wood man. Play it safe.

Although I use aspen( because I bought a ton) a friend who is also a large breeder of colubrids ,uses the same pine shavings we use for our rodents as substrate for 90 per centof his snakes.(Obviously no cedar!) My gripes about aspen are mostly with dust in the bales and it does get moldy quick when a snake trashes his cage with water, etc. If you're only housing a few animals and not on a super tight budget use the aspen. Of course newspaper is even cheaper than the pine.

My view on wood type substrates is if you can smell it use something else. I'm not talking a plain cut wood scent, I'm talking aromatic like pine, fir, cedar. but thats just my method and opinion

The only wood substrates we use on all our reptiles is Aspen or Mulch. I'll never use anything else, just in case. We have many animals and wouldn't want to chance anything.
