How do you say colubrid? I originally said it call-uh-brid, but the more breeders and keepers I spoke to, the more I realized I was the only one saying it that way, and everyone else was saying it cuh-loo-brid... so figured that was the way it was, been saying it that way most of the time, except I still sometimes bust out the original way. About a year ago I started also saying call-you-brid, but whenever I would say that people would give me a strange look....lol :p How do you say it? Does anyone know the actual correct way to pronounce the word? Is there are pronunciation key for herp words? I would think this would be especially useful for the latin names

I say cuh-loo-brid mostly, sometimes I say call-you-brid. When I hear it said on TV by herpotologists they say cuh-loo-brid.

I say it cuh-loo-brid too. I just assumed that was the way it was supposed to be pronounced cause everyone I knew said it that way. The only time I heard it pronounced call-you-brid was when i heard the crocodile hunter say it.

According to the dictionary, it's pronounced call-uh-brid.

I did a bit of research for the pronunciation rules. My gawd, they're complicated. Anyway, here's a website that shows the prounciation, AND even has an audio for proper pronunciation:

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entries/39/c0493900.html

Here's all the complicated rules, but if you search the page for the word Colubrid, it explains why the emphasis is on the first syllable, which contradicts one of the rules:

So there ya go. :)

Check out these sites. If you click on the little speaker icon by the pronunciation it will download a man speaking the word. The two dictionaries pronounce it differently.

If i were a mad farmer and my old Cow, finaly just had a newborn, i would say Cow-U-breed!!!
