whoohooo im snake sitting!!

well..last night my friends roommate got a call from his landlord. She found out that he had reptiles in his apartment and told him she wanted them out...ASAP!!!. So I gladly told him I would look after them until he got a new apartment. So for the next year, I have an 8 1/2 ft female boa (appears to be BCI). She and my 7 ft male are getting along nicely, hopefully they will end up mating. As of now they are definately in the courting stage. He is riding the length of her body and he rubs he has been rubbing his tail against hers all day. Also, I have his baby yellow head retic (Bob Clark line). He is in blue right now, so once he sheds I will snap some photos of both and post them. Anyway, just thought id share my excitement. :D

Haha that's awesome :) Yeah when I was apt hunting I always ask right away, "Now, your ad says no dogs...what about pets in enclosures and aquariums?" "Like fish?" "Uh...no...but they do have scales!"

So far no one turned me down, but they were all creeped out lol

uh..no i didnt quarantine her. I've read that you are supposed to quarantine any new animals, but I dont have anything big enough to put her in besides the tank that my boa is in. I know my friend keeps his animals clean and healthy, so hopefully it will be okay. What do you think can happen? She seems to be healthy. So let's assume she is just fine, no mites, breathing probs..etc.. Them being in the same tank should be okay for now right? He hasnt left her alone, he is like all over her. I think he is likin' his new roommate..lol

did you ask your friend if it was ok to breed HIS female to your male? You may end up with all the babies if not, and if you can't even quarintine *sp?* 1 boa, how are you going to house.....what 10-like 40 baby boa's (have no clue how many they have) Where is HER cage at? What about the burm? How are you going to house it Rectics can grow like over 3ft in one year are you prepared to make him cough up the money to house these snakes. Since they are his who is going to be buying the food, especially for a yearling rectic, I've heard they can take rabbits at a year (again I do not know this for a fact, so don't take my word for it)?

What can happen, if she has parasites that he don't know about, it can get transfered to your snake. Any sickness can transfer it to your snake.

Sounds like you are in denial. if something were to happen who is going to pay for the vet bills? You wouldn't be able to tell who is sick first, and since YOU put HIS snake in YOUR snakes enclosure then it would be your fault if his snake got sick, but you wouldn't be able to tell who was sick first becuase you can't tell who's fecal droppings are whose. Just because there are no breathing problems and no mites, that does not mean that the snake/s are not sick.
Do you realize how much stress you could be putting on that female, not only being moved to a brand new place and having NO time to acclimate, but being breed to. Did he even cool her to breed in the first place? If not I bet your going to have a small litter and a few slugs.

This is not a personal attack, I'm just asking out of concern for the snakes.

You shouldn't be housing them together or breeding them for a number of reasons, a lot of which saphhire stated. And while I am glad you are so exited about having another snake for a while, you should be prepared to house them seperately. If I were you I would seperate them right away. It doesn't cost that much at all to modify a rubbermaid to be a good enclosure for the snake. (If they can be kept in rubbermaids, I'm not sure.) But please seperate them soon, and moniter them to make sure no one is sick!

I would give more advice, but I really need to sleep.. I can barely understand what i'm typing.

Anyways, get them seperated, and make sure they're healthy. Good luck.

ok..I guess I should have been more specific. This is a friend of mine that I have known for over 10 years. Yes, he would put up any money needed. He will be buying the food for both of his snakes. The retic is in a 20 Gal long tank. He is pretty small right now, so that should be good for a little while anyway. As far as breeding goes, he is all for it. In fact it was more his idea. If they breed successfully. We will build something to house the babies in. We both know a few people that own pet stores and already said they would buy them.

And her tank, before he had to get rid of her, was a walk in closet. She had the whole thing to herself and it was all set up for her. It really sucks that this lady wont let him keep these snakes. She has a personal vendetta against reptiles I think. She claims that her son had a boa and it chased her down the hall...lol..pff..imagine that!

As I said, this is a real good friend of mine. He was fully aware of putting his female w/ my male for the time being. He brought her over and put her in the tank himself. I know there may be risks, but on the flip side, you have to agree there's a chance neither one of them will get sick. I believe this is her first time breeding, so naturally there will be a higher slug count. And as for cooling, well that is a whole debate in itself. I've read there are plenty of people that do not cool before breeding and they have just as much success. As far as im concerned, if it happens...great...if not..then thats fine too. I did this more as a favor to him...then for breeding purposes. I didnt want to see him have to get rid of his snakes. Hopefully, I will not have to house them together for too long.

IF by chance they do get sick. I am in a position where im not worreid about paying for vet bills. So yes, they would both be treated if something should happen. My friend would insist on paying for half of it anyway.

i don't know what was wrong with your friends enclosure, but i don't see any difference between this and a breeding loan.

I would try to have them in different enclosures when they're done copulating though...

Nothing was really wrong with her enclosure. My friends landlord found out he had reptiles and told him she wanted them OUT!! He tried to reason with her a little, but she wasnt having it.

How will I know when they have copulated, if I do not witness it?? Will he stop showing interest in her? Will he get agressive towards her? I just want to know the signs, if any, so I can seperate them.
