They are wonderful snakes - very gentle, tolerent of handling, consistent feeders (bit of tendency to get chubby!) and beautiful. Much calmer than many other kings and they virtually never bite (there are very few snakes I consider trustworthy with kids but I think these guys are).

They stay relatively small (under about 3 feet), like to climb so are good for a naturalistic vivarium and ours is out during the day. They seem to enjoy basking so are a nice snake as a pet because they are visible during the daytime instead of just coming out at dawn and dusk.

I cannot believe these are not more popular - all the beauty of grey-banded kings without the preference for lizards as youngsters. Ours is quite dark grey, but there is a lot of variation, and even more if you consider all the close relatives (thayeri and durangos) that are just as attractive. Initial price on them here (western Canada) is steeper than corns, but they are fantastic pet snakes.

That sounds like everything I wanted, except the size. I was looking for something larger. Bummer...

Thanks for your help.

Possibly THE most underrated "pet" snake out there. So many different looks. True, they do rarely attain 4', so if you want a large snake they're not the one. I would recommend them however to ANYONE who is interested in a snake.
