Ok the thing has been curing for almost a full week now. The smell has gone DOWN. But it is definitly not gone. we are going to be making the ventilation holes bigger (with a bigger drill bit) and adding another row half way down the cage. Is there anything I can do besides add more ventilation to make it stop off gassing?

Use the water based Varathane Elite series next time... It dries fast, with no odour and can be cleaned up with water.

Put a strong UV light on it and it will cure faster. Make sure it's in a well-ventilated area.

hmmm I get the impression that your enclosure is closed as you're talking about making the vents bigger to get rid of the smell. It should be some place warm dry and wide open

we used minwax fast drying waterbased polyurathane. Do not have access to a uv light and dont' have the money for it! it is usually open, we have to close it sometimes because we have to leave animals in the room that would trash it if left open. We do not have access to any type of varathane.

Any reptile-quality UV lighting is some help, industrial ones that emit UVC work best but they are hard to come by and can be hazardous to humans.

If you've got UVB on herps in your house, just borrow the lights during "dark" hours in their cages.

Well guess what we found after about 200-300 (usd) dollars worth of work, blood sweat and tears? a 4ft x 17in x 1 ft (maybe taller with the lid) rubbermaid like container. The lid securely locks to...........:( we are going to get 2 of them this friday.. 20.00$ each..:) and work on the other cage as a project type thing.........
