I've never used either, but I've heard good things about the Nikon CoolPix 4300..In fact, I'm picking up one as a christmas present to myself. :D
I'll check back to this thread, though. Maybe the Cannon would be a better choice. We'll see what everyone else says.

What are your requirements? What exactly do you plan to do with the camera?

Although I don't own either one, I know they are both very good consumer digital cameras.

You could probably get an older model camera for a lot less money that will still blow you away and meet all your needs. The canon A70 for example is most likely getting cheaper since the A80 came out.

jughead,

I was contemplating the same thing a few months ago. Did tons of research and came to the conclusion that both cameras are fairly equal. I ended up going with the Canon A80, and dont regret it. One thing that really set them apart, atleast for me, was the swivel lcd on the A80.

Phox,

Ya I think I'm going to with the Canon A80 also due to the fact that the model is a year newer and the swivel lcd that you already stated. So you are happy with the camera? do you have any complaints or problems with it? also it would be great if you could post a couple of pics you have taken with it. Thanks!!!

The Nikon takes better macro pics, but the Canon takes overall better images. Differences are very minor, you cannot go wrong with either one. Personally, I like Nikon over Canon.

I just picked up the A80 and was NOT disappointed. It just takes practice to get great pics with nearly any camera.

jughead,

As of now I have NO complaints with this camera. But, I did upgrade to the A80 from a 3 year old hp digi, so it was like going from a Geo Metro to a Lamborgini :). One thing I recommend is buying some rechargeable batteries. Heres a few pics i've taken with it:

Ive debated Digi Cams on here for about two years now and im still waving the Canon Flag. For me it has to do with add ons. Canon is the best when it comes to add-ons for the camera. Simply put, the vast majority of extras for their cameras are interchangeable. Thus, by buying a semi professional camera, you may add on extras that would vastly improve its capabilities. This is something that the other mfgs dont always follow suit on very well. I have lots of experience with cameras. For one i am the Sites photographer, and i only use Canon. Currently the site uses a Canon G3....i have zero complaints with this camera. So far it has taken roughly 3000 pics for the site, not to mention pics for my own personal use....and it has been flawless. I have all the add on macro lenses, flashes etc. I use a 1gb memory card, a 512 mb memory card and a 64mb as well. The best thing about this camera is that it has built in rechargable batteries...infact this one uses a camcorder battery and its capable of over 1000 pictures on one charge. Canon also makes some of the most efficient battery powered cameras in the world. For those of you that have used camera before that use regular batteries, you know that digi cams are extremely hard on them. Often taking only 40 pics to a set of batteries...and considerably lower if you use the flash or alot of macro tuning. So its refreshing to see canon has addressed this and strived to make the cameras efficient. A task they have done over and over with alot of the "A" model cameras. Well thats my rant, good luck :)
