Newbie Scorp Owner

Tonight I got my first ever scorp! A CB baby (produced by Steve Chandler). I just bought it from SCALES Zoo less than half hour ago. It's SOOO cute!!!! I've kept some T's, but I am not an arachnophile, infact, I'm pretty arachnophobic. Anyhow, I got this little emp to fulfil a dream I had about owning one. I actually held it. First time holding a scorp. Absolutely amazing. Don't think I'll be getting any more (those other scorps are just too nasty and scary looking!) Thought I'd share the excitement!!

Right on Katt! I'm also an arachnophobe, but I've always dreamt of owning scorpions. Well, Erin came home with two of 'em, a baby and a BIG adult. They are so awesome to watch... when they do move, that is. :D

What I meant by fulfilling is that I actually DREAMT about owning a scorpion, that stayed on my shoulder and went shopping with.

I have named my emp Figaro the Fiddler. I'm sure he's a male. I can't wait til he gets big. Ryan and Sheila fed him a pink and he's MASSIVE. His pleural membranes are stretched to the max!!!

great job, you may find that their ease of keeping makes you want to expand your collection. I keep the hot ones, but excepting the parabuthus that can spray venom most are easy and safe as display animals. Interaction with them makes several species possibly dangerous but in an enclosure they are pretty harmless. Don't let fear be a factor unless your giong to try to play with them, they don't climb glass and don't sting through it either. Safety is always a factor but I would rather someone bought a deathstalker than a copperhead in most cases.

Congratulations! Scorpions are so awesome, I'm actually pondering on getting some Flat Rock Scorpions as well to add to the collection. :) Be sure to post some pics as soon as you can. :)

Rev, thanks for the advice, but even with T's I was pretty specific with what I liked. Just the pretty ones, that were friendly. I really have a problem with some T's, most spiders, and lots of scorps. For instance, Vanan's Paruroctonus boreus (Canadian Scorp, Northern Scorp) freaks me out and I hate it and if I found it on the floor I'd kill it. Icky!!!!

I recently got an Emp too. I love her, (at least I think that it's a her). She's pretty comfy in her new cage and eating like a pig! Congrats!

My emperor is the oposite! He never STOPS moving!! But yeah, they are awesome to watch though :) My little hippolite just never stops though :D It's like watching back to back episodes of your favourite show! :D:D

Our adult male is the same way, Emily. I thought ours was just unusually active, because I always hear scorp owners talk about how boring their scorps are because they never move. :) At night, ours is all over the place!

Maybe others aren't keeping their scorps hot enough. Figaro was pretty slow when we brought him home. It's chilly from Ryan and Sheila's to here, but once he warmed up, woo, he was scuttling about!

It isn't entirely an issue of temperature. While some likely do keep their scorps too cold, I can tell you from personal experience that forest scorpions (Pandinus spp., Heterometrus spp.) -- particularily adult females -- have a tendancy to settle in rather permenently once they have constructed a burrow they feel comfortable with. Males and juveniles have a greater tendancy to wander. Males in particular, as they often go out looking for mating opportunities.

Congratulations Katt, is always good to have a scorpion. I still remember when I got my first emperior, although I keep hots ones mostly now. They are very interesting animal and always display different behaviour and character. I also say they are addictive too, I'm starting from one emperior to more than 30 now.....

I agree with you skinhead, my female emperor has scarcely budged from her burrow in AGES, while the male is always motoring around! and P.S. Congrats on the new scorpion Katt!!!
