View Full Version : Got more pygmy's!
Before I get into the pics, I want to give some shout outs to a few people. First off to Phil Ramos for putting up with my incessant, nagging emails for the past few weeks about the pygmy's. Secondly to Brandy (aka Collide) for her rather large female pygmy. I'm not sure you can actually use the term "pygmy" in reference to her. And, of course, Grant for putting on an awesome show once again. Scotty for the "big bucket 'o calcium" and Robert for expanding my prey items.
Without further ado... here are my new kids!
The first pic are 2.1.1 Bearded Pygmy Chameleons (R. brevicaudatus). Some of the older members around here know I've had these before.

The following 2 pics are of my pair of Usambara Pitted Pygmy Chameleons (R. temporalis) . For some of the newer members, I've included a size reference pic. These guys are full grown! And I absolutely love their little "kissy" lips.

Nice pix, Trace! Are you positive about the first pic? Those look a lot more like R. spectrum than brevis to me. All the brevs I've seen had a lot more green to them, maybe it didn't show in the pic. Also, the horizontal barring is more prominent in the specs than the brevs.
Great chams either way,
WM
WOW! Trace those pitted pygmys are just outstanding. What amazing little creatures they are!
Congrats on the new additions....I wonder if those chams know how lucky they are to be at your house/cham paradise? lol

Im not one to be all cutsy wusty but those are pretty cute. You know I was just in Petland and they had some of these pygmy type chams, they called them leaf chameleons but I highly doubt that thats what theyre really called. Pretty cheap too, $70 each. Tiny little buggers, maybe an 1 1/2" at the most.

wow, in another thread we had a long talk about these things, cause here they are rare, we use to have (connie) that breed them, but she stoped. So trace here is trying to breed them. Like i bet everyone here wants to get more different speices of chameleon, mayb jacksons, havnt seen any around. But 70 bucks isnt that bad, i heard that at the shows they cost 40, but theres no more grrrrr, i think trace is the only people that have them in the GTA, i could be wrong.

Those Usambara's are nearly as cute as me aren't they Trace? Bet they'll gobble up all that calcium in ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, 1000 yrs?
Collide: I was afraid she was going to eat the smaller ones in that pic. She is IMMENSE, I can't get over it.
Wuntu: You could very well be right. Stranger things have happened in my life. Now I was always under the impression that the R. spectrum had a little rostral horn and were a little bulkier in shape than the brevs, kind of like the R. temporalis. I wish my Necas book got into a little more detail about the whole Rhampholeon genus. It doesn't show well in that pic, but the three smaller ones (juvies) definately have the typical brev beard and few of them are green in colour.
Drewlowe: You don't want to know! It's embaressing.
Meow: I hope some breeding happens... I've had success before with the brevs. That's the whole point in getting a big group of them.
BigPlaya: Actually you are right. The Brookesia and Rhampholeon genus of chameleons are commonly called leaf chameleons because well, that's what they look like! They are terrestrial species and hang about in the leaf litter.
Emily: If you stop posting pics of your lovely spiders, I'll stop posting pics of my chameleons. :p
Scotty: No, they will never be as cute as you because they don't WEAR FLAMING PANTS!
Cheers!
Trace
Wow Grats they look great.

BigPlaya:
They likely were, as chams of the genus Rhampholeon go by many common names. Leaf, dead leaf, mossy leaf are just some of them. They wholesale for $25-$50 Cdn depending on sp, so the retail price usually isn't too bad. The trouble is that those WC's at the pet store are swimming in parasites and because of their tiny size, are almost impossible to treat properly.

The Pygmies in the first picture are definitely Rhampholean Brevicaudatus. This species has a very varying color and pattern range. The ones you have actually look to be from the Usambara mountain range of Tanzania. I import literally a thousand each year of R.Brevicaudatus, R.Temporalis, R.Uluguruensis, and a few others. Some locales of R.Brevicaudatus have green coloration but most of them range from Brown to Yellow in coloration. Just about all locales have the horizontal striping on their sides. The R.Temporalis,R.Uluguruensis and R.Spectrum have diagonal stripes on their sides. If anyone has any questions I would glad to answer them for you.
