View Full Version : I saw the saddest thing in a pet shop today...

I stopped off at a local pet shop today on my way home from work...

first sad thing I saw was a gorgeous California King snake that I am pretty positive was dead. He was not sitting in a natural way...

But even worse was the tiniest tree boa I had ever seen that was on the verge of death. He was the skinniest snake I have ever seen in my life. Not an ounce of anything on him, pure skin and bones. He was in shed, which was of course patchy and un healthy, as he sat there all you could see was his skin folded and wrinkled and his little tongue slowly coming out every once and a while to show that he was still gripping on to life. I felt so horrible for the little guy and only wished I had $150 to at least attempt to save him, although the condition he was in, I'm not sure he would pull through.

Soo soo sad. :(

You may be joking, but this probably isn't the wisest of posts.

The best thing you can do to bad pet stores is not buy ANYTHING from them.

never give petstores money for anything, everything they offer can be purchased elsewhere. Only though financial support do these businesses survive.

That is so terrible :(

I think you should go in and yell at the manager. I always end up doing that because they have no idea what they're doing. Throw some care sheets in their face and tell them to take care of it by tomorrow or else you will report the store.

no worries, I am not a supporter of pet stores that carry animals. All supplies I bought for my soon to be new ball python was bought at walmart and canadian tire. I just went in there because it was one of the only pet stores in the city I had never been in...wish it had of stayed that way.

saving a snake by buying it is the wrong thing to do. I have no problem buying stuff from petstore that carry pets, as long as they are correctly cared for.

Not every pet store is evil.

If you buy that pet from him, why would he care for it or any other pets in the future. He is gonna make a profit selling sick animals.

Your only option is to go and see the manager, tell him the snake is gonna die and ask him if he can give it to you for free.

he'll probably say no, but there is nothing more you can do, and nothing more you should do.

I did a stupid move like this once, and my animal died 2 months later. then I felt bad for having a dead animal even though it wasn't my falut at all and I lost some $$ also.

Don't encourage petshops like that.

I don't have the knowledge or equipment to care for the poor snake even if I could get it for free. I was basically just stating if I could save it I would, but even if I could take it home I'm doubting he will last much longer.

Who could I report the pet store to? Would the SPCA look into one baby snake in bad health? Most of the other animals in the shop other than the king snake that may or may not have been dead looked healthy.

hey gotballs i think i know which one you're talking about. they have had that kingsnake for atleast 5months, and a few weeks ago i saw the ATB's theyre skinnier then a pencil, obviously in bad shape and about 5 living in the same cage. every pet store in victoria is terrible but one..and i told you which before hehe...i don't go to them unless im getting frozen feeders. all the managers are retards who don't know anything, one guy said hes housing a BCC's and a rat snake in one giant rubbermaid LOL

Supporting the pet shop in any way shape or form is making the problem worse.

I would possibly call the SPCA but I would certainly never again buy anything from them, not even a 5 cent goldfish.

I'm realistic. I know I can't save all the animals in the world from poor pet stores, so I buy any supplies that I need from anywhere that I want. Why would I put myself out just to 'teach this store a lesson'? A lesson that will most likely go unheeded. I'd much sooner make sure that all of my animals live exceptional lives. I'm also fairly positive that there are many, many more animals being treated poorly in homes everywhere, than there are in bad pet shops.

My store sells only food and supplies. I often refer to the pupply mill stores as "flesh peddlers". I am formally banned from a national chain of stores for reporting them for abusing their "store mascot" a parrot, I reported to their head office and the SPCA. Then I spent a few weekends handing out Anti Puppy Mill literature outside their store. Apparently they took issue with this:rolleyes: which amazed me because if they were doing nothing wrong and selling healthy non-mill animals, it shouldn't have been a problem. o>

Hey Gotballs I told ya remember your very first post here I said don't go to any local petstores as the ones int this area with reptiles are disgusting. I can't go anymore cause I think I'll lose it. PM me the store you're talkin about.

you can always report to the Better Business Bureau. check the phone book for the number. Basically, if they get enough calls, they have to alert authorities to examine the place. that's your best bet imho.

Sleddergirl, whether what you were saying was true or not, I believe that the store had every right to ban you, and you're lucky you weren't arrested for scaring away customers and being a public nuisance.

To each their own I suppose mykee.................
I don't think there was anything wrong with informing the head office and the SPCA of abuse of an animal. As far as the puppy mill literature goes..........rescue a dog that has come from one of those places, then come talk to me..............

I know how you feel, I actually worked in a pre store who's conditions were less than optimal for the reptiles. It angered me, especially when I was doing what was best for them IE: Feeding them appropriately and getting into heck for it.
