View Full Version : breeding project
i have a couple '02 cal kingsnakes. one is normal black and white desert and one is black and white 50/50. i havent yet had them sexed, but when i do they will be bred together when they are old enough if they are male and female. if not i will just find something to breed the 50/50 to. my question to all of you is, if i do breed the 50/50 to the desert, what kind of hatchlings should i expect to get?
Probably a bunch of black and white babies.
What patterns are they(striped, banded, abberant)...? That answer will affect the patterns of the babies.
thanx will.
desert = banded 50/50 = pretty much banded
is 50/50 genetic? and will i get like half desert normals and half 50/50?
the 50/50 actually looks quite similar to the one in your avatar. is that your snake?
One of them. :D
If I've read correctly, Cal patterns aren't simple dominant/recessive genes. In other words, you will likely get a variety of patterns 'in between' the two you are breeding, not just one or the other. If you breed a 50/50 to a banded snake that is more black than white, you should get mostly banded snakes that vary between the 2 parents.
The only simple recessive gene I know of is the albino gene. There is an outside shot that both parents are het for albino, in which case 25% of the babies would be albino. You won't know that until you breed them though.
excellent. thanks alot for the info. gotta love the kings eh? i cant wait to start breeding them next year. ive never bred anything before but my kings are both about 30" right now and healthy as hell so im hoping to breed them next year or maybe even the year after.
