albino pac-man frog

hey everyone, i just recently aquired a baby (about 1"-1.5") albino pac-man frog and was just wondering why he doesn't eat the crickets that crawl right over his head and down his mouth and then "walk" away.....i'm a little confused! i mean, the one we have at work will eat anything that is in front of him......is this something to be worried about? i'm also working on getting some pics for you.

I am no expert but I'd assume its because 1. He is not used to the new surroundings yet....2. You are watching him. Which since he is not used to the new surroundings is making him more nervous. 3. A health problem.

I would think you are making him nervous, and would leave him alone (with no crickets in the cage) for a few days. Then maybe try offering one or two crickets at night, then check in the morning.

All valid, Marisa. I thought you said you weren't an expert.

The only other thing I can think to consider is food type. Ceratophrys are pretty open minded about menu, but some can get a little selective. I fed mine almost exclusively goldfish as per de Vosjoli's prescribed regimen. It grew from 1 1/2 inches to nearly five long in less than a year. It also didn't respond well to prey other than goldfish after a while.

Keep trying, offer fewer prey items, and review your husbandry. They are incredibly tough little garbage cans, I'm sure this one will start chewing on fingers in no time.

thnx guys, i'll try giving him a couple days and then try some crix again. oh, and how many should i be putting in his cage?

Try offering crix only a couple at a time. I find that providing too many prey items to ambush feeders seems to confuse and stress them too much. Right about the time they settle on a target, another climbs onto their face and distracts them from the task at hand. I also found that hand feeding horned frogs helped ensure they ate enough and avoided substrate ingestion.

ya like Wuntu Menny said to many will confuse them, my frogs get like that too if i put 4 or more in they;ll just ignore them even if there right in front of them id try 2 or 3 and then go from there i'v never had a pacman so i'm not sure how much they eat but 2 or 3 should be good and then u can keep adding more in that qauntity good luck.

I had one pacman named Manja that never ate food that was crawling on or near him, he just had to lunge a few inches for it. Sometimes they prefer to see the food coming towards them and are shy about prey items that suddenly appear right near them.

But it's probably just stress from getting used to a new home that makes your little dude so shy about eating.
