Black and white (or blank) newspaper is tops. If your looking for something more natural, I've heard that cypress mulch is good.

We use shredded aspen for the BPs. They will be on indoor/outdoor astroturf when they get really big.

cypress mulch, paper towel, newspaper, carefresh, aspen (probably a good chance you'll find some mold eventually) umm..id say cypress mulch would be the best, it looks good and is supposed to hold humidity really well

I only use newspaper in all of my racks. Ease of cleaning, cheap or free, and it's inability to hold and trap bacteria are a few selling points.

If you don't like the look of newspaper, paper towels/shop towels or bath towels work just as great. Bath towels give you a great selection of colour to choose from as well.

Loose substrates cannot be fed on without posing a risk of impaction. If you want to work around this, cypress mulch or Carefresh work well.

I don't personally care for aspen, as it molds fairly easily when exposed to moisture in enclosures with restricted airflow, although it seems to be ok for some people. Indoor/outdoor carpet sucks for any snake. IMHO it cannot be cleaned well enough, and over time it will eventually have its own collection :p It also does nothing for maintaining humidity, and isn't absorbent.

Linds, you are dead wrong on the astroturf not being able to hold humidity. I can tell you've probably never used it if you're saying that. I spray down the turf in my big boa's enclosure when he is in shed, and it is still moist 3 days later. As for it not being able to be cleaned well enough, again, I can tell you've never used it. Throw it in the washing machine, and it's just as clean as anything else you put in the laundry.

I say screw washing stuff, newspaper's the way to go if you have a lot of cages to clean. If you want something decorative there are about a thousand choices, all equally nicer to look at and harder to maintain. Again it comes down to whether your snakes are ornaments on display in your livingroom or in racks down the basement. I have both of those arrangements (actually they're slowly taking over the whole house) in the livingroom they still get newspaper but more cage furniture so it's not so ugly.
