View Full Version : Ideas for rack
Well im wanting to build a 3 sections type of rack system for my 3 40 gallons. I was thinking stacking all on top of each other and having drawers that pull out with the tanks on them.
I just thought of the perfect exaple :D
Like a file cabinet. Any ideas/suggestions on how to build this would be great!

I would think that the best way to go in building a rack would be to have rubbermaids that the snakes would be in. To make one just to hold your tanks seems a little odd. You would have to have good ventilation in the drawers, and they wouldn't recieve much light (if any at all) if housed in tanks within drawers. Would the tanks have lids on them? If so, I would just suggest keeping them out as view tanks, as they would get more light, and you could probably save yourself a lot of time, money and effort by just keeping them out. But, if you are really interested in building an aquarium rack, i'm sure there are some people here that could help you out.

Sorry i didnt mean drawers but rather shelves. I ment drawers as in when i pull it out kinda like a file cabinet effect. I want the tanks to sit up in a shelve like how a book sits in a book case

So kind of like a bunch of shelves, with an aquarium on each shelf? And they will be able to be pulled out so you have better access to each tank?
I think that's the idea you're trying to get across, no?
I say just find a nice place in the house to put them, as building a pull-outable shelf for aquariums just seems kind of silly when you have to design, pay for, and build this thing just to have a place to put your tanks on. Woudn't it be much more convinient to just have them in an easy access place, like a stand or a desk?
I'm not really sure how you would build pull-out shelves, but if you're still into the idea, you can probably find a way, either with wheels in the shelves or something like that.
I'm not sure if I get what you're trying to portray. Mabye I have the wrong mental picture of this thing.

Well I like racks that are big...and....natural
Thats right oliverian.
The reason i ask is because i need to save space or i wouldnt care and just let them sit on the floor

I think I know what you are trying to get at, a large cabinet with sliding shelves, kind of reminds me of the rack storage for servers. Anyway, not that I have any expertise in the matter I don't think it would be to complicated to build. If I were building it the major things I would try and keep in mind is if the rails are able to support the weight of the tank when fully out stretched, wouldn't want to pull your tank out to have the metal bend and snap right off with your tank on top. Other thing would be to make sure the shelves have enough support so that the wood doesn't crack or break in the center from the weight. I'm sure you could pick up some heavy duty rails from a local hardware store for a project like this.
