Hey

First time posting here, I'm in the market for a Corn Snake, I really like the coloring on the Bloodred corns. But anyway, this will be my first snake in about 15 years had a few when I was younger, really like them but didn't know how to care for them properly so they never lasted long unfortunately.

I'm still in the research phase at this point, was looking to setup a 40 - 50 gal aquarium for my new Corn, and from what I've been reading if doing that I'm going to need multiple hiding places and lots of places for the snake to feel secure which shouldn't be a problem. But anyway back to my original question. Are there any reputable breeders or stores in the GTA? I'd prefer to actually see the snake before I take him home and sometimes pictures just aren’t enough, also the idea of shipping the snake doesn't appeal to me.

I'm sure I'll have tons of questions over the coming months as I begin to setup the habitat so I'm sure you see more posts made by me in the near future, thanx for the help.

Frist of all, welcome to the site and secondly you made a GREAT choice!!!! Corns are great!!!! LOL...sorry...too much of a corn manic....

Thanks for the information, the 23rd is a little early for me because I'm still in the information gathering stage, haven't even bought the tank yet. I want to make sure the tank has all the right tempatures and basking areas all setup before I bring anything home. I may come by the show anyway just to see whats avilable since this is all new to me anyway. But I want to make sure I do this all right the first time. But when I am ready to make my purchase you'll be my first choice in finding my snake.

It seems great that you are setting up everything before the little one arrives. I always like people that does their research and readings before getting a pet.

Oh yeah...if you want a caresheet I can definately send you a caresheet that I wrote myself. No problems at all.

And if you want you can put down a deposit down and I can hold the animal for you for a month~ Also not a problem at all~

Well I guess my first question would be, is a 50 Gallon tank too large for 1 corn snake? I know it may stress out a hatchling because it's so large and if I don't provide enough hiding places he will be stressed out. But as long as I provided enough hiding places and was able to adequately heat the enclosure would that size a tank be fine or would it cause the snake too much stress?

I’d love to take a look at your care sheet, the more information I have at the end of the day the better I will be able to take care of the snake.

well I don't think that a 50 gallon is going to stress it out too much if you have enough hiding places for it But it's going to be quite hard for you to spot the poop and spot where the snake is.

Also to be honest...some snakes can be quite stupid....they can't find water in a too large of an area.....so you'll have to make sure that it knows where water is. There are times when a hatchling doesn't know where the water is and die of dehydration (at least I have had those cases before...lol...and what's even worse? I only have them in a 5 gallon tank (if that large) and the water bowl is basically as big as 1/5 of the set up....hahahahah

Don't forget to mention that baby corns are EXCELLENT at excape, make sure they CAN'T get out!

That's super important, DON"T buy one unless you know it has eaten a few times and shed at least once. Maybe getting someone with more experience to help you with that part of it would be a good idea. There are too many breeders out there that sell the hatchlings way too soon and many of those snakes will die. It's hard to find a steady source for prey that small (finding ANY pinkies is sometimes a chore) so you should consider that, you can find ads on this site to help with that though. I personally don't think brand new herpers should buy hatchlings at all because they are that much more fragile and harder to keep but that's just my opinion. It's certainly much easier to care for an older, more established animal. Where the new guys get caught is in the low price of hatchlings, especially at the shows, just remember that you really do get what you pay for in the snake trade. Good idea to check this site out before checking out the pet store though. It's better to get info from someone other than the guy trying to make money from selling you something. Also it's better to buy directly from the breeders you'll find on here than through the pet shop middle man. They're the same animals just for better prices.
