View Full Version : my idea.. is it possible?
ok my crested gecko is coming to me next week.
i was planning on getting a 10-15 gallon wide and turning it verticle. the tricky part i was thinking of is could i remove those black borders at the top and take out 2 of the verticle panels and install a wooden frame at the corners where the glass used to be and put screen there.. if that would work what kinda wood would you recommend? I know some woods are hazardous and melamine isnt durable. or if you have a different suggestion completely
oh yeah.. i'd need a door too. preferbly on the side.
if this doesnt work in time dont worry i can put him in a termporary 10 gallon horizontal. it's a baby one so..
quick response needed thx!

if thats your idea then your better off just buyin the glass instead of dismantling the tank and just makin a custom made tank and seal it. Thats my personal opinion.

i think it would be easier to just make an enclosure

buying individual glass and cutting it is a lot more expensive than dismantling a 10$ aquarium for me. do you know what kinda wood i should use though? also what do i seal it with? i know the tanks use some sorta silicone but where do i find a non-toxic kind? thx

okay well lets see how this one works. First i'll start by sayin that you could just go to any hardware store and ask for a non-toxic sealent but instead of that why don't you do what my enclouse design was just on a smaller scale. If you want i'll configure my plans to a smaller scale and post them here for you. My enclosure is a wooden enclosure with a vinyl tiled walls and plexi-glassed windowed doors. Vents on both ends, and holes cut on the roof for heat lamp. if you don't like the idea thats cool just tell me and i'll figure out another way to design you a enclosure.

You can use either aquarium silicone or GE silicone( I forget the actual name, will look it up). The GE is cheaper, and still safe, although on the tube it will say it isn't.
Yes it should work. You will have to support the remaining glass though....my thoughts would be make your wooden frames for the screens, silicone the finished panels to the glass, and put the trim back on if you want to.
Not sure on the type of wood to use tho.....What about metal? Some sort of steel.....I think that would look kinda kewl actually. hmmmmmm...now you're giving me idea's.
yeah i was planning on using the frames for the screens.. still need a confirmation on wood types plz.. will plywood work?

you could use 1x1 framing wood
Almost any wood should be fine just seal it with something

Why not just use the aquarium like it is and put a screen? Humidity will be fine just like that and it gets enough ventilation
i thought of that but i couldnt figure out how i would make a door without having to take out a panel neway. nothing against u but could i get a second opinion on the ventilation cause i was debating about that w/ my self and i didnt think just one side was good enough ventilation
you can buy screens that just clip in (some of our 10g tanks have these).
well to answer my own topic question.. "yes" over a period of 2 days me and my dad completed the plans. we made an outline of it on auto cad so it looked all professional (the plans) i had a lil trouble taking off the glass panel though.. and i fractured one of the other panels but i sealed that up.. dont really care if it looks tacky. overall it looks great! i cant wait to decorate it w/ fake plants and stuff. my crestie comes wednesday morning
