Well I went to the pet store that fired me and found that they had a nice Yellow Anaconda. Temperament was great, but it won't eat. I looked in the enclosure and was disgusted. The VERY SMALL waterbowl had NO water in it and was dried up, the Anaconda was curled up under it. The cage was a fair size though, so yay for that.

So anyways, I was fed up. I mean, I know that sometimes pet stores have to bend the rules on cage sizes and such. Even PCPC had my kingsnake in a small cage, but they're meant as TEMPORARY enclosures, so it's fine...

I went up to the Manager and Owner and I said "I'm coming back tomorrow and if that Anaconda doesn't have a better tank setup, I'm reporting you to any authorities I can find on animal cruelty. I'm sure they'd like to see those two Savannah's crammed into that little tank. And that pile of sick leos" and I walked out.

The next day I walked in, and the Anaconda had a Pond! :D

I win!

It always bugs me when they get in animals that are "speacialty" animals and can't even be bothered to provide the right size water bowl, or water period for crying out loud. I call pet stores on what they are doing all the time when I see stupidity. Recently Classic and I were in a store that had a sick Iguana in the dark on sand.
Cheers,
Trevor

Great that you could help out. Perhaps YOU should give THEM some caresheets. Maybe invite the owner/manager to call on you for advice when they get their herps in the shop. He may surprise you and be very receptive to the idea and you'll feel better knowing they are set up properly. I still have a few shops call me for advice now and then. Some are willing to pay you for the service :) I always try and help and of course, beg them not to order animals they are not familiar with keeping. (how could they educate the customer when they have no idea themselves?!)

Heck they should have an idea if they sell books on the animals they sell. Maybe what we need is mandatory care sheets like california has. I know a few book writers hate the idea of free care sheets but we're talking about the care of the animal her, not some electronic or mechanical piece of junk, and yes people should have the book on the care of their animals not every one does. If stores had to give out care sheets then maybe they might have their animals in the proper care.

crimsonking: Unfortunately I already tried that, I told them I would come in on a volunteer basis 3 times a week or however much they wanted me and strictly take care of the herps. That way, not only do they look better to the customers, but two other plus sides arise. Then the fish guys can only concentrate on what they're good at AND when customers see a teenage GIRL handling them, they're less "scary" and alot are more open to the idea of reptiles.

I had one lady come in looking for something as small as can be in a lizard because she was terrified of them but her son wanted them. So I showed her an ocelot gecko and a leopard gecko. Then I asked why she was afraid, and she pointed to the Savannah Monitors and said they're creepy and dangerous. So I stuck my hand right in them because I had one monitor in particular who would "hug" my arm to get taken out. She fell in love! lol
