View Full Version : BP taking a long soak
The adult female BP that was given to me went into shed about 4 days ago. She started soaking in her water dish when her eyes blued over and has been there ever since. I don't think she has moved unless she does it at night. I've never had one do this before and was wondering if it would cause her any harm.

I have never really seen a ball soak in the water dish.
It could be that your snake is too hot and trying to cool off.
She could be just a snake that likes to soak.
Have you checked for mites, as snakes that have mites will soak in the water dish to try to rid themselves of those little buggers.
it could be way to dry in the enclosure. What are your temps and humidity in the tank? and what are you using for an enclosure?
She's in a rubbermaid, no mites, and the temps are good. Before she went into shed she was laying on the warm side all the time so I don't think she's trying to get cool. The guy that had her before me was keeping her in a 55 gal aquarium with a screen top so she was a little on the dry side and there was pieces of shed all over the tank so I would say she has been having bad sheds. I took her out of the water bowl and within 5 mins she was back in :( Maybe she knows best? I just don't want it to cause her any harm. She should be shedding out really soon.

i dont think it will cause too much trouble, but just keep an eye on her.
It sounds like this is just what she does to get herself nice and moist for the shedding process.
Good luck and let us know what she does after she sheds.

maybe she does it b/c her past enclosures were tooo dry, and she used to soak, and hasnt kicked the habit
I hope she eats a nice fat rat! :D I'm trying to get her switched to rats, she was sent to me eating 1 F/T mouse every 4 or 5 days.
I went back to check on her this morning and she was out of the water bowl and had shed, a perfect shed by the way :D
I guess she knew what she was doing.

Oh for crying out loud, it's soaking because it's in shed. Our boas do that, our BPs do that, even the boas and BPs we have at the store all practically live in their water dish while they are in shed. It's nothing to worry about. If your BP decides it is getting too cold in the water, it will find heat.

Hey! calm down. I just asked a question, problem is over and she has shed and is out of her water bowl. I knew she was in shed, I just had never seen one soak *that* long. Are you having a bad day?:)
Just one too many stupid questions asked today? :D LOL!

That was not directed at you, Syco. I just love it when someone posts a simple question with an even simpler answer and watching the theories come out of the woodwork. I'm surprised no one said that your BP was soaking because the solar flares are causing Jupiter to align with Mars. :D
All I'm saying is, 95% of the time, the siple answer is the right one. That's all. (Unless of course, you seriously question your husbandry techniques.)
Are the solar flares causing Jupiter to align with Mars??? Because I have a corn snake that is acting awful funny.... :D

Your corn snake is acting funny because bees don't wear sweaters in the winter. Thus, they are all sending out a pheromone that is making the sheep take their own fur off to make sweaters for the bees... but the bees can't fly with sweaters on. All of this is very stressful to a corn snake. Duh!
:D
God! Do I ever feel stupid now.
I should have known that! :D

Well, sadly.....in Houston (at least for me) it means:

You just seem like a cool guy....
And being married w/six kids, I'll stick the ladies myself!

Thanks Het. And mean it is... I couldn't talk the next day. :D
Slannesh - You and I haven't partied in years. Maybe I've developed a cowboy attitude, didja ever think of that?
Oh, who the hell am I kidding....
I'll be in Edmonton soon enough. We'll have to party again. :)
Jathoma - There is nothing wrong with having nothing but online friends. If it weren't for bulletin boards like this, I'd have no friends at all either. :D
