I'm bored and I was just wondering if it would be possible to cross a crested w/ a gargoyle gecko? I'm not gonna try, I just thought about it and was curious.

Interesting question, never heard of that before, I wanna know the answer too. :D

I would guess no, considering gargoyles prey on crested geckos in the wild.

There have been crested/chahoua crosses though....

I would like to see a pic of that if you have one.

A gorgeous Rhac specie! Also known as the NC big eyed or blunt nosed gecko. They have patterns and pigment that resemble mossy leaf tails.

Gargoyles eat cresties in the wild? I thought cresteds got larger than they did?

Gargoyles have much larger jaws and teeth. While they couldn't take down a full grown adult, I could still see them being extremely agressive towards them. They do eat younger cresteds.

Yes, I have heard that they would eat a crested...I breed both so I am not about to find out by putting them together!!!
Lowell - we have a female mossy leaftail, don't suppose you have a mate for her?

Nope, but I know someone that's sitting on some eggs right now. I've always liked sikorae, but CB's aren't commonly available and WC's always arrive loaded and unhealthy. I'll make a call and see how the eggs are doing.

Man I would never have thought a gargoyle could eat a crestie. It would be pretty amazing to see a hybrid of the two.

I have been reading up on a lot of the Uroplatus species and u. sikorae is one of the most beautiful types, so many colours. Too bad they arn't readily available in Canada yet. I guess the problem is not enough people know about them, same thing goes for lots of other species.

Thanks Lowell, please let us know if and when the eggs hatch. We believe our U.sikorae is captive bred and we have had her about one year or so.

I'm still at a loss as to why anyone would want to do this. Rhacs are still relatively new to the hobby, their natural ranges are sufficiently restricted as to guarantee inaccessability for wholesale plunder. Why do we need to deliberately attempt to produce intergrade mutts?

I'm pretty happy with mine in separate cages. I have no desire whatsoever to be showing my collection and have to say "This is a crested, this is a gargoyle, and this is a "frankengecko". Yep, a genuine ciliriculatus with the head of this one grafted to tail of that one. Note the five asses on this particular specimen. Aren't they so cute.

Thanks, I'll pass and leave Mengele/Mephisto experiments to you, Doug. Despite the sarcastic tone, this isn't a personal attack, I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just getting too old to appreciate it.

ROFL! Frankengecko... I gotta remember that one. :D

I'm no gecko expert, but I'm against cross-breeding ANY species. I would not pay $10 for a Crestie/Gargoyle cross. It baffles me that anyone would devalue an animal as wickedly cool as a gargoyle gecko.

I'm definitely not a fan of this type of thing, especially with geckos. I have seen a cilliatus/sarasinorum cross before and it looked like a giant crap-brown neonate crested... there's nothing cool about that, the poor little ******* was so screwed up it gave me chills. If you do decide to let this continue please be courteous and get these freaks microchipped and isolated, i'm sure there is a reason why these are not commonly present in wild populations...
Let me ask you this; would it be right to cross u.phantasticus & u. ebanui just for the heck of it? Most people at this time would have you shot for just screwing with the bloodlines, let alone mixing species due to the limited stock in North America. From my point of view cresteds and gargoyles aren't much better off, they just reproduce better in captivity.
The only two reasons for crossing species I can come up with are for attention or some perverse "what if" scenario, either of which can be fufilled through other means. If someone wants to make a noticeable contribution to herpetoculture or herpetology they should try their hand at keeping/breeding rare or difficult species, why go for negative attention when you can just as easliy get respect for achieving something positive?
I don't feel nearly as strongly as this post might suggest, but it still bothers me to think about it. Either way people can make their own decisions about how to handle this but if someone has/does succeed I hope they will keep it to themselves. :S

hybrid crosses actually strenghten gene pools like w/ dogs a labrador/retriever is a a super obedient labrador looking dog. whereas pure bred dogs tend to break bones easily or some other disadvantages

Right, labradors are inbred, they have been selectively bred to display certain traits like beardies for example. Outcrossing domestic dog types allows for more genetic diversity which reduces the probablility of genetic problems from expressing themselves. Labradors and Retrievers are from the same species, canis familiaris, we're talking about mixing different species from the same genus. A more appropriate example would be crossing domestic dogs with wolf or coyote populations. (all are from the genus Canis)
I hope my explanation is ok, i'm trying to keep it short.:p
