take it to the vet ASAP. When you take an animal in, it is your responsibility to care for it, especially in it's time of need. Don't worry about the cost until you get there and find out what is wrong with it. If you can't pay for it, leave the snake there and the vet will deal with it (which unfortunately may include euthanasia). Don't just not treat the animal because you can't afford to take it to a vet - if you do that, you have NO RIGHT to own any animal. Vet trips and emergencies are part of being an animal owner.

Good luck with the snake! Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Phone the vet and ask him/her. Every vet is different. Don't worry about cost. If you have a sick snake, fix it. The snake didn't ask to be in your care in your cage in your home.

And MANY things can be the cause of your problem. No one is psychic here, so how can we tell/diagnose your snake and provide any useful solutions. Next time post pics of the snake and the setup. Basically, what you posted is the same as me coming here saying my car won't run properly, what should I do? LOL! Impossible to even know where to begin!

Is it just a bad shed or is it individual scales?

t-dot
11-02-03, 05:11 PM
yes it is individual scales i call repitle hq~! they me to put polysporin on it scales from time to time

ohh_kristina

that's all you're going to do? Put polysporin on him? IMO, he needs to be checked out. Either you are giving him WAY WAY too much humidity, or he has some sort of parasite. Snakes scales don't just fall off for no reason. At least get a fecal done for this snake or recheck your husbandry. Again, good luck with it!

ok but taking it to vet it is a must then i think i should do that then~!

You NEED to take him to a Vet, if the Vet says "put polysporin on it." then do it, at least you took him to a Vet and got a professional medical opinion, not some reptile dealers. It probably will require more than just polysporin. I could tell you that some super glue or duct tape will do the job, this could fix things on the surface, but there still may be some underlying medical condition that needs care. Just take him to a Vet, if not give the snake to someone who will take proper care of it, both in captivity and when it gets ill.

does anyone in scarborough know of one vet who would take a look at snakes?

ohh_kristina

a quick google.com search led me to this: http://www.icomm.ca/dragon/canrepvt.htm
There is a phone number and address to a vet in Scarborough..check them out. Do a search on google.com for their name and see if it comes up with any recommendations about the place.

edit: you can look for more here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=scarborough%2C+Ontario+reptile+vets

Hope this helps!

Are the scales clear or are they brown? If the scales are clear then he's probably having a bad shed (very dry) and the scales are flaking off 1 at a time. If this is the case dump the water dish into the substrate and fill it back up again as well as spray the snake down with water.

If the scales are brown and falling off then it's probably scale rot. Minor cases can be treated by keeping the snake warm, dry and applying polysporin to the affected areas. If it's a severe case then you'll have to use an antibiotic as well as polysporin. If you have to go that route go with Fortaz (ceftazidime) and not Baytril (I hate Baytril).

Good luck,
Corey

Take him to Dr. Markus Luckwald at the Animal Clinic at Markham Road and Eglinton. Just east on Eglinton from Markham on the south side of Eglinton.

If you own an animal you have to take care of it, and sometimes a vet is the only solution.

Make sure your aspen shavings are changed and dry at all times,
and that the cage has a light for heat on it. Heat and proper food are critical, and if you have those, you shouldn't have sick animals.

Sorry its on the North side of Eglinton not south.

Just keep asking pertinent, specific questions, and you will do just fine t-dot. Just fine.

Also, many vets will allow you to make payments on your bills. So initial cost shouldn't scare anyone:D

how much does it really cost those??

Vets can be expensive but it is worth it for the well being of your snake.
A routine check up at my vet costs me $35 USD.

My rescued Boa had a respitory infection which set me back about $150 USD.
The benefit? I helped nurse a sick snake back to health and I have had no problems with her since then. It is cheaper in the long run as the vet can offer expert advice and save you money in the long run.

Go the vets at High Park Animal Clinic. They are probably the best you will find around the area. They are the only ones I trust, and although I have a herp vet not 10 minutes from me, I still make the 1.5 hours (one way) if I need to see a vet. They are located at 3194 Dundas St W. Bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. You cannot put a price on the life of your animal either. 416-763-4200 ;)
