Got turtles!!!

Hello guys

I just went and got 2 baby red ear sliders i believe, researched a lot about them, but still need to read mroe, got any good ones??? loving them:). Anyone got any tips anything???, just a question do they eat blood worms??? im guessing its a yes, correct me if i'm wrong. Ill post some pics once i get my camera from my friend, shes borrowing it right now but it will be up soon:)

Hi! Congrats on your new turtles.

Your baby turtles will need to eat turtle pellets, like Reptomin and some treats as well like possibly small mealworms, earthworms or I am sure fresh bloodworms work. You can buy them frozen. As they get older though they need more veggies, so you might keep this in mind as they are young. It is easier to get them accustomed to eating veggies when they are younger so maybe offer them some now. As they grow veggies are fed, Reptomin sometimes, insects, etc.

www.resoasis.com is great.... everything a RES keeper needs to know.

My suggestion is to feed a couple pellets a day. If you feed more, they will grow really quickly.

Yes, RES's will eat bloodworms but bloodworms are extremely high in protein and RES's are omnivorous so too much protein isn't good. You can feed bloodworms as treats a couple times a month but not as a staple diet. Even with a filter though, do not leave the bloodworms in the water for more than half an hour... always be sure to completely change the water after feeding bloodworms. Most people feed their red eared sliders a diet of 1/4 vege turtle pellets, 1/4 meat turtle pelets and 1/2 fresh foods such as earth worms, frozen bloodworm, lettuce, corn, peas, live feeder goldfish and guppies, carrots, and much much more. Basically whatever people eat, red eared sliders will eat too but that does NOT mean that you should go feed your slider bread and cheese. In fact, I strongly go against it. I'm just saying that RES's will basically eat anything even though they shouldn't so don't even bother testing out acid-y vegetables such as tomatoes because trust me, they can and will eat them and they can and will get sick from eating them.

What I also did with my old RES was I would "groom" him. I know, it sounds sort of weird but basically, I would have a little tub filled with about an inch of lukewarm water and I would put my turtle in it. Then, I would wet my finger tips and rub his shell to get any gunk off of it. He always calmed down whenever it was time for his "grooming" and from the looks of it, he really loved it. After cleaning his shell a bit, I would lay out a big towel on the ground and would let him walk all over it to dry off. Once he was dried off, I would rub a thin layer of special cream on him. Here's how I made the cream: Most petstores carry a small container of a peach-coloured cream that you are supposed to rub on your turtle's shell if it is soft. The cream will help harden the shell. Since your RES is healthy, he wont need a harder shell and so to weaken the cream, I mixed in some "Aloe & Naturals Lotion with Cucumber Extracts" made by "Vaseline." It comes in a pale green bottle with a clear, dark blue cover. So basically the cream is 1 part hand cream, 1 part turtle-shell cream.

So once you have the cream ready, you can rub it on his shell after bathing him. I "groomed" my RES 3x a week.

hey meow nice to see you here from the cham forum. Gutloaded feeder fish is probably my turtles favorite food. He used to eat Reptomin pellets but went off them. Now its goldfish, cooked chicken(which is easy to get vitamin supp. into) bananas and Kale. If you feed your goldfish lots of food high in Calcium, they make an awsome staple food. And he LOVES chasing them around his tank!
