why is it people keep posting ads that they want snakes but dont want to pay what they are worth?
i saw a want for emeralds but wanted to pay llike $400
now come on people if i spend $1000 on a snake and im just trying to get rid of it am i gonna give it away for nothing ....NO
im gonna keep it till i get what i want at least the $1000 back
if you cant afford to pay the price of an animal you need to consider can you afford to house and feed the animal i seriously doubt it
i own 4 snakes and my feeding bill is like 1 rat a week per animal so by pet store prices $20 a week $80 a month thats $960 a year
think b4 you buy any animal
my little rant

I don't entirely agree...people buy privately via clasifieds in order to secure good deals on animals especailly ppl who have many animals. Just think that 100 bucks saved off the purchase can go towards some decent stuff for the new herp. Now I'm not saying ppl should give their animals away but there is nothing wrong with trying to get a good deal. A ball python costs less then a green tree python but their maintenence costs are pretty close...just because I can't afford a piebald ball python doesn't mean I can't feed it. PPL want to get the snake they want so the try to get it at a price they can afford there is nothing wrong with that. Don't like the offer then don't sell. Offers are not insults they are offers. Nothing wrong with offering.

when your trying to sell something back for the same price, its kinda hard to sell it back.
if u paid 1000$ for an etb, i dont think i'd want to buy it since you want to sell it really bad.
when u put it up on the Ads, people aren't looking for just snakes, they're looking for a good deal. If u dont like it well.... open up a pet shop cuz those prices are insane!

I too dislike when people ask for amazing animals at rock bottom prices. Do these people have any idea how much time and effort and money goes into breeding? It is not easy. We, as breeders DO NOT make our livings solely by breeding. Almost all of us work 40 hours a week or more, most at crappy minimum wage jobs (I'm lucky to not be in that category). I know that I spend at least 2 hours a day just feeding and cleaning my leopard geckos, and we have a lot more than just leos to deal with! I can understand that people want to get a good deal, but you need to understand the market in the reptile industry to be able to make educated wanted ads. If someone were to suddenly sell their 2nd generation, CB, Red phase madarin rat snakes for $250 each then the market would crash and everyone who spent years and thousands of dollars breeding would be in the hole, waste deep in snake ****! Just look at leos. Perfect example of a failing market. Why else would we strive to be the first to produce all these crazy morphs? We have to stay one step ahead of the game just to make minimal profit. Don't get me wrong, you should never pass up a great deal, but don't ask for platinum at copper prices:D

and yes, it is very amusing!:D

I agree that i don't like people that come up with crazy offers when you have stated what the price you want is, But look at all the ad's that say make a offer, So what are you going to do offer what the snake is worth Or try to get it at a good deal? Sometimes it is not the people making the offer that are stupid it is the person that said in there ad to make a offer.
Let's face it no matter if you paid $1000 for a ETB there is always someone that would sell the same snake for $400. And that is why some people offer low amounts. Because the way some see it if the person wants to sell it that bad they will take the $400.

Far to many people buy something and sell it within a month due to boredom. To many immature herpers out there do not take into consideration how much stress is involved when an animal floats around like a trading card!
People rush into buying animals they dont really want, but want to say they have and want to do it as cheaply as possible only to turn around and sell it a month later and usually for 2-3 times what they paid for it even though they wouldnt pay half of what it was really worth.
If I see OBO I'll offer a crazy price, if I get it no problem, if I don't get it, oh well thems the breaks.

I will be the first to admit that i am a haggler. An animal is only worth someone is willing to pay for it. There are people that spend $100 or more for cornsnakes. Personally, I never pay more than $3 each (well, I did pay $5 once I think, but it was a single not a group). I also do some jobbing from time to time when deals get thrown at me (helps my addiciton pay for itself :D ). I had gotten CB feeding juvinile Emeralds for less than $200 each. My entire intention in buying them was to sell them for $300. Still a good price for the buyer and if they decide to sell it in the future, they can make a profit. Of course I want good deals. Especially if I am buying a group. If I take an entire clutch, I expect at lest 20% off the asking price. And 90% of the time it works out great. Dealer gets a little less each, but moves them all out at once which is worth it, and i get a good deal. Now I do pay market value and above for ones i really want. Particularly those that I know a history on and that I can assure diversifies my bloodlines. $250 for a Guyana about killed me. But it was an animal that I wanted (actually the wife wanted) and it was to be a permanent addition to the collection.
What all that rambling is getting to is back to what I said at the beginning: It is only worth what someone will pay for it, period. If someone is looking to resell animals, then in order to pull a profit of any kind. Often people will pay more if the animal is going into breeding stock or for a personal pet. But face it, everyone a good deal no matter what. Of course people are going to try to get animals for less. I will agree that sometimes they get a little ambitious in their offers. But if you buy a snake for $1000, and the market value is $1000, and you try to sell it later for $1000, Then that doesn't make sense. But even then, if someone offers you $400 for an animal you are selling for $1000, don't take offense to it. Just tell them that you can't go that low or something along those lines. Trying to get a deal does not mean that they don't have money as you imply, it just means they want the most for their money. Capitalism, ya gotta love it :D

If you want market value for your herps then don't put OBO on your ad or 40% of the asking price might be your best offer. It's that simple. It just doesn't make sense that some one writes "taking offers" in their ad then gets offended by the offer.
If you want a certain price then state that price or the minimum you will accept and spare yourself. People posting ads looking for animals at a low price are suprisingly almost always answered as their is usually someone looking to get rid of an animal at almost any price. If I want an emerald tree boa for 200 bucks and you don't want to sell it for that price then don't. Nothing wrong with me trying.
I 150% agree with u BoAddict. I hate seeing that too, it really bugs you.

The acronym OBO is an open invitiation to offers that might be way low. You can't blame someone for giving it a shot. Everyone is looking for that really big deal on a great snake.

I don't think that anyone has said that OBO is what they dislike. It's when people post "wanted" ads asking for people to sell their animals for dirt. There's nothing wrong with hunting down a deal, we all do it, but it's appauling what some people set an animals worth at. I have made many "cheap" purchases and have sold things for amazing prices, but I would never offend someone by asking for something for nothing.:D
and no one is whining imo, it's a reasonable topic of discussion, that has been brought up before (by me and others) and no one saw it as whining then either, just debate:D

The moral of the story is "its worth at a certain time what someone else is willing to pay for it, no more and no less:
so what you paid is somewhat irrelevant to what you paid since that transaction occurred in a different time and market.
When I look at my snakes, or Super Hypo Tangerine Geckos, I know what they are worth, and would never sell them for a penny less than what they are worth.
Reptiles only go too cheap, when a seller is too desperate for the cash and lets them go. But this is the market place.
