What's up folks. Just dropped by to learn a bit before I buy my first snake. This is a great site. Excellent info all around. Personalities have made me laugh out loud more times than I can count. Great humor here. Looking foward to gaining knowledge from you all.

Not yet. I really love the peruvian boas. I think they are the most beautiful snakes I've seen. The problem is price. They are expensive and I wouldn't want to house one in my 65 gal. tank. They belong in something like a boaphile=more money. Corns are cheap and also nice looking but when I think snake, I think something bigger. Although, this is my first snake so maybe I should stay with a small, docile, easily kept animal. The smart thing to do would be to get a really nice looking corn and keep it my 65g and see if I enjoy caring for a snake, then go bigger if I choose to. But, as I said, I love those peruvians. It's a tough choice.

Dont get something that you really don't want, If you have to take and save your money and in the mean time do all the reserch you can on the snake you want. you and your snake will be better off.

Good luck with your choice

Hello, and WELCOME! :D Hope you find a nice first snake, I love my corn but she isn't very challenging to look after, but I like her because she never misses a meal and is very pretty! But I do agree, you should find a snake you really like. :D

I really love the peruvian boas
Who doesen't! They are awsome. But you're right they are expensive and they do deserve nothing but the best. Have you thought about going with one of the other true red tails first, or maybe even a nice colombian? That way you're still into boas with out the expence of a peruvian.
Cheers,
Trevor

Welcome to the site. I agree with BoidKeeper that a nice Columbian boa would make a far better starter than a Peruvian. But, at least you're doing your research FIRST. That is a very respected practice around here. :)

welcome! If you want to start with a boa, I agree, go with a BCI. I have a colombian boa and I love her to death!

There is a store close to my home called NY Reptilia, they are listed on the Kingsnake website. They deal only with reptiles and it is a clean, well run establishment from the looks of the place and the animals he had for sale. The owner said he can get me a baby peruvian for about $300-$400. I don't know if this a lie or not, he knows I'm inexperienced. What do they usually go for and what do the other true redtails go for? The Suris seem really nice as well. The BCI are $100 but don't do anything for me, no offense to the BCI keepers out there. The owner said I could keep a peruv (if I go BCC it will be a male)in my 65g tank for a year then upgrade to 48" wide enclosure after he's grown a bit.

Welcome, avelli2000. You could keep it in a 65gallon for a year and then upgrade to a 4x2 or more in the future.

Personally, I feel that as long as you are not going into venomous species or one of the giants as a first snake, and do plenty of research into its care requirements, then get what you like. It will be a much more meaningful and rewarding experience for you.
