I had the chance to work with a Taipan today at the Everglades Outpost. I offered to clean the cage just to see what the snake would be like. Spastic would be an understatment!

Good deal on working with a Pan. One quick correction though. The Inland Taipan is Oxyuranus mircolepidous and is all but non exsistant with in the US except for one or 2 lucky keepers and a few zoos. The Taipan you were working with was Oxyuranus scutellatus canni or the ssp of typical Taipan found in PNG and Irian Jaya. Then there is the fabled Coastal Taipan or Oxyuranus scutellatus scutellatus which is also very rare within the US.

All the best,
J

Thanks Jeremy,

You are correct it was Oxyuranus s. canni from Papua New Guinea.

All the best

If it was from New Gunea it would be a new guinea taipan or a coastal taipan

A PNG or Iran Jaya Tiapan would probally be the best fitting name but that population has not been seperated long enough from the mainland form to become its own sp(or atleast taxonomist dont think so yet). It is simply, as of right now, a sub species of the Coastal Tiapan but PNG Taipan would be better in discribeing the form.

BTW, I do not belive many shipments come out of PNG anymore. I think the bulk of the sp from that Island chain are exported out of Irian Jaya, the other side of the Island. I may be wrong though Hey Ray Hunter, any comments on this?

Welp, adios,
J
