View Full Version : outdoor dangers?
I see alot of pictures of people letting there snakes rome around outside.
Is there any dangers to doing this?
Of cource if the weather is cold it wouldnt be a good time lol but what about mites and other bugs that might hitch a ride on your snake?
Come next summer i plan on taking my snakes out with me sometimes and wanted to know what i should watch out for
Reptiles should only be taken out if you live in a rural area, or if you have a fenced in backyard that give you privacy from neighbours. Herps are not dogs, they don't go for walks to the park or anything like that.
You must make sure that your snake stays away from any fence perimeters, nooks, crannies, holes, rocks, etc. They can get away and in to spots you can't faster than you think.
You must be certain that the lawn is free of pesticides and the like.
Do not keep your snake outside for extended periods of time. They can get stressed out, as well as a little UV is good, but the sun has powerful rays these nocturnal animals are not accustomed to being in for great lengths.
I've been taking my animals in to the yard for as long as I can remember. My snakes only spend minutes outside. However, my iguana is housed outside and my tortoise spends most days outside as well. I have never experienced any problems with them picking up any foreign bugs, other than a passing ant.
Thanks linds :)
Im guessing a BP would be the better of my snakes to take out for longer periods
Snakes: JC, BP, BRB
Please DON'T take your snake for a walk down the street with you....most (uneducated) people fear and hate snakes....there is really no reason to take your snakes out unless you want the "shock factor" and then you are only making things worse for the reptile community....sorry if I am being too serious with you but with all the by-law problems that we are facing lately it is serious....PS ...if you mean taking the snake out in a private area well, then it's up to you what you want to expose your snakes too...cold... parasites... ect..
No, lol i dont mean walking around with it all day scaring people but rather taking it to my friends house who also keeps snakes... he lives down the street.
And every now than let him get some fresh air in my back yard. Thats about all i plan to do!
If you intend on travelling your snake, please package it appropriately. As mentioned by chas*e, trouble can arise all too easily when snakes are in the eye of the public. The only time its ok to have the out in the open in public, is for approved educational/entertainment purposes.
Sorry if I was stern but you have no idea what some people do...I seen an idiot walking around with a 10 ft burm at a county fair in whitby last year until the police took it off the jerk...
