Thx for looking guys :)
I would not want to get bit by those fangs. Can you imagine getting hit in the face by those!?!? Man...
are all pythons like that or just tree species?
tree species have bigger teeth because they normaly eat birds
and enso it's funny because she snap at 3 inches of my face when I slided the window lol, but the day if I don't feed her I can take her in my hands, she's tame like a corn ;)
wow~
what teeth...great looking photo...I wouldn't want to be the mouse in it's mouth....ouch!
AgaR,
The canines are quite impressive on ETB's, but birds are not the normal prey, arboreal rodents are generally the fare. The canines are for a "sure grip measure" because if you drop it, it's gone. Think when emeralds hunt, at night, and they primarily find prey from it's heat signature not via sight. They are ambush hunters and don't actively seek out prey. Most rainforest birds are roosting at night and not moving around, while the rodents are just becoming active looking for food and are more likely to wander into the emeralds target range. When birds are taken, I would imagine it is because they have roosted too close to a sleeping emerald.

Ok, They are not K-9s or fangs....... They are teeth....... The teeth are longer it tree species because they eat birds........ They need the longness of the teeth to get through the fethers and the down of birds...... Tree dwelling species of python or boa, are almost exclusively bird eaters........... Awsome pics by the way.....

osti de belle photo sa alex :)
Gregg,
That is not accurate. How do they catch birds? I hope you don't subscribe to the idea that they snag them out of the air. The canine teeth ( that is the common term used) are not for penetrating feathers but to insure that prey is secured. If they ate birds as a primary source of food, why do wc, sub-adults and adults take rodents so readily? They are ambush hunter's, that remain stationary when hunting (etb's), they hunt at night. Are birds active at night or are they roosting? How many night hunting birds live in the rainforest? Birds have excellent eyesight during the day, but at night they are basically blind, how do they avoid flying into unseen objects? Generally only predatory birds, like owls, have night vision.

I am sticking with What I said....... They are not dogs or cats so they do not have K-9s....... They are primary bird feeders......... Are you saying birds do not fly at nighy??? That is pretty silly........ And ETBs do not feed during the day??? And most of the fresh WCs I have seen have been problem feeders at first....... Did you come up with this info yourself or did you hear this from someone??????
Gregg,
I did not say birds do not fly at night, I asked how many rainforest birds fly at night? Most rainforest birds are roosting at night so how do the enter into the range of a stationary, ambush hunter? Go ask what the primary food source for etb's are on any corallus based forum. I can't at present quote chapter and verse where this information is in print. Yes, etb's are night hunters, everyone that I have sleep during the day and only become active at night. I'm sure in captivity they could be "programed" to eat during the day, but that would require waking them up. Remember that they are primarily preyed upon by daytime hunting preditory birds as adults. So being "seen" during the day is a bad idea.
Only sick, improperly housed WC's are problem feeders.

either way they are still an impressive and beautiful snake...Those are some awesome pics and thanks for the dime for size ratio.

Gregg sry mate you are wrong :

the long teeth are for holding prey not to penetrate feathers

Awesome open mouth shots AgaR. I would definitely NOT want to get a finger or a lip or a nostril or anything for that matter, caught in any of those teeth. CRAAAZY!
I guess I can throw in a few cents as to why arboreal boids have such teeth.
- The fang-like teeth are used for keeping hold of prey. 'Cause like it was stated earlier, if it's dropped, it's gone. Arboreal boids have to deal with staying on branches while snatching prey, constricting, and eating eat without it (the snake) or the prey falling to the ground.
- Primary diets would have to be mammals. Whether it be rats, squirrels, monkeys, if it's in a tree, it's game. Mammals give off crisper heat signatures than birds do. However, if a bird was messing around, roosting or in mid-flight, near an arboreal boid I'm very sure it would get the treatment. A bat can get it the hard way too as I'm sure an ETB can "see" a bat easier than "seeing" a bird.
Could you imagine an ETB catching a bird in mid-flight, knocking the snake half way off it's branch only to leave it hanging on by one or two coils? What would be funny is if the momentum completely jerked the snake from the branch, sending the bird and the snake to the dirt. The thought amazes me.
- As far as day or night feeding goes, well, I have an MPEG of an ETB consuming a bird sometime in the day when the sun was up. So I'd say day or night.
Good night. Hopefully. :D

Infectrix you are right . I wish someone would caught on video a ETB catching a bird in flight :P that would be so awesome . These beasts have so many years of evolution and they are amazing . Im sure they dont even let go if they fall
edit : cought on video lol i missed 2 words
nothing to add :)
Thx for the kind words guys;)
and yes Clownfishie, gtp have realy little teeth if we compare them to the emmy's teeth, my gtp bite me one time and it's nothing I just don't want to try to get bite by my emmy... lol
Ciao! ;)

great pics!
Wow Agar Nice shot! I have to say that Craig C Is right. Those are designed to hold pray not for grabbing birds in flight. In fact all recent studies show that GTP',ETB',ATB' diet consist of 20 to 35% birds 65 to 80% mammals. I agree with Craig to that most GTP,ETB and ATB that are problem feeders on mammals only when they are improperly housed or have other health problems. I bough numerous WC and only those with health problems had a hard time starting to eat and they only did after being cured. I must say to that all my snakes eat at the same time even arboreals and thats during the day.
Greg there's a good book on GTP's if you wanna know more check it out ....The complete chondro by Gegg Maxwell.
Thanks,
Stav
hehe, I don't read that recent studies, but I now I'm less stupid lol;)
And yes The complete chondro rocks!
available at www.naturama.ca ;)
AgaR,
I'm sorry, I was not implying that you were stupid. I have read as well that the teeth (canines) were for penetrating feathers for animals that mainly feed on birds. It has also been stated that emeralds were designated corallus caninas because of the extremely long front teeth, but in reality they were named this due to the profile of the head which resembles a dog. They are also called dogboas. It's like being taught something in school regarding history and finding out later in life that because of new findings, what you were taught was wrong.

Gregg,
I imagine that your information has come from many books on emeralds that are quite outdated and inaccurate. Dr. Henderson, who has been studying corallus forever has documented that these snakes have been found with mammalian prey in their guts way more often than avian... Hope this enlightens you..
Rob
Can't forget the flying mammals that they prey on. Bats.
Craig I just joking lol :P
In french we said Je vais me coucher moins naiseux à soir lol
So I translate it I never think you call me stupid haha :) (I.m sure I made a mistake in that sentence lol)

You don't have to be a dog or a cat to have K-9. People have them too.
Amazing pic!
Cheers,
Trevor
Craig dont worry as Agar says its only an expression we use here and he translated it;) it goes like....I'm gonna wake up less ignorant tomorrow...there's no bad though its like saying well I learned something new today;)
Craig....It's like being taught something in school regarding history and finding out later in life that because of new findings, what you were taught was wrong.
Its so true i've been saying that so many times;) Many many things about reptiles are constanly learned and updated.
Rob... Henderons's book is quite amazing its a must for all ATB keepers.
I ordered mine at www.naturama.ca they got everything.
Stav
Wowzers, and i was thinking about getting one of these bad boys too!
Paolo,
Don't let the size of the teeth hold you back. Most emeralds will become handleable once they get used to your husbandtry routine. Just never, ever get any part of your body within range once they have gone into hunting mode!:D

Do you think you could get perminate nerve damage from a bite
Thanks

Yes, a guy who has been bitten by a female of 7 feet at the arm, lost 40% of his motricity...

this thread has been very informative to me, i have learned alot. thanks guys! btw do carpet pythons also have huge teeth? i heard it hurts like a b*tch to get tagged by one of those, and since they are semi-arboreal it seems logical they would? im just curious btw

Nice pictures.
I was lucky enough to get nailed by my 3' emmy a couple weeks ago. >(
NOT fun. It bled 10x more than the bite my six foot boa constrictor gave me. Hurt a lot less though.
