Hey all,

Going to a show on the 1st. (Dallas Metroplex) I've got an itch for something new, and something rather specific.

This is the current collection:

1.2 JCPs, 0.1 BCI, 1.0 leucistic texas rat

Also probably at least one ATB in the making, quite possibly two. (Dan Mulleary babies. *dances*)

I've been considering getting something small and fairly docile. Something that will tolerate a fair amount of handling. (A few times a week)

I love my big guys, and I can't wait to have a zesty little ATB, but I'd kind of like something small and nice to hold onto for contrast. What I'm considering is getting one of the following:

Axanthic Kenyan Sandboa (Love the black and white)
Rosy Boa (probably desert)
Sinaloan Milk
or a Black Mex King

Any thoughts/suggestions/preferences?

I like the axanthic kenyans. I am thinking about picking up a pair.

Well if you are looking for nice to hold, I'd skip over the king and milk. Even the calm ones can be pretty flighty.

Rosies and Kenyans are both great for handling, though if I had to choose one over the other it would definitely be the Rosy.

Those are unbiased opinions on the two..now the biased one... get the Rosy! Rosies are awesome and totally underrated little snakes. Usually great feeders, slow moving, docile, variety of colour and pattern variations, easy to care for, and super tolerant of people. They are without a doubt one of my favourite snakes :D

I have both of these, normal KSBs too. You can't go wrong with either for handling. You may get to see the Rosy boa more because it won't be barried all the time. Some Rosy Boas can be nippy though. My deserts are fine but my mid baja tried to eat me once. If you don't believe my just check out my gallery. lol
Cheers,
Trevor

Thanks Linds, that was one of the things I was definitely trying to feel out. Sinaloans are kinda special to me because that was the first sort of snake I ever got to hold 'solo', if you will, but I've never owned one. However, flighty is a good description for my rat. And I know the ATBs are going to be little livewires. So I think I'd rather have something a little calmer.

I'm kind of on equal footing between the rosy and the KSB. May just have to see what they have to offer at the show.

Even tho my collection contains 1.3 sand boas, my roommate has a sweetheart of a 3 year old male whitewater rosy boa.

He is a very active snake and loves to be out and explore his cage and loves to be handled. He even has a fondness for hair and loves to climb around the shoulders and up the ear to the head and back down to hang out around the back of the neck and shoulder area of his owner.

I would never let my sand boas do that as they are just not able to grip as well as the rosy. Most of the time, once in the cage, I don't see them out unless its 2 am.

Rosies are awesome climbers and actually make decent enough display snakes. They love to climb so if you put branches and rocks in you are sure to see them out and about. Sandboas prefer to remain hidden for the most part.

I would personally get the Axanthic Kenyan Sandboa, that is such a neat morph in Kenyans. :)

I am still trying to figure out why people refer to Anerytheristic Kenyans as axanthic. They are not lacking yellow pigment, they are lacking red pigment.

Anyway, Erin and I are the proud owners of 4 Kenyans, one of which actually eats! lol.. they can be picky about food at times, so be prepared. But, if you want something that tolerates handling and will likely never bite you, get the Kenyan. If you want something that has a slightly higher chance of eating you like Trevor's did, get a Rosy. You will definitely be happy with either.

Yeah, I'd noticed that. Axanthic is how I've seen them referred to most often, but I agree that anery would be more correct. Perhaps because they resemble Axanthics of other species?

Hee! For those interested, I came home with not one, but two baby Kenyan Sand Boas. A female Anery that is absolutely gorgeous, and a male normal with wonderful bright orange on him that is het for albino.

My best friend, who accompanied me to the show, commented that KSBs bear a certain resemblance to the sandworms from Dune. We're both fans of both the book and movie, so it stuck. The male is Leto, and the female is Jessica. For Duke Atreides and his consort.

I'm just thrilled, these guys are beautiful, and I look forward to watching them grow.
