Just curious as to how to sex smooth-front caimens..I know of 2 that are very similar in size (a little over 2 feet) and one has a much larger head than the other..I know this is an indication in many monitors,is it the same with crocodilians??

Hey Matt,
Yes you can tell by head shape/size usually, though this isn't 100% accurate. It is also much easier to tell on mature, adults than with youngsters.
Just stick your finger in there and feel around for something........or better yet, get Ben to ;)

Odd, the head shapes of either sex of similar size always looked the same to me.
At two foot "May" be able to internally probe them or what works for me at this size is either piss them off and normally they will show you thier "stuff" and if you want to be totally sure lay the animal on its back and spread the cloaca, if you cant probe. Just some easy methods.

just to expand on what the above post said...
it usually takes two people have one person hold the trig firmliy upside-down then the other applies gentle pressure upwards and outwards on the cloaca, if its male you should be able to pop it fairly easily this really works well if the trig is 24" or less

I've heard of very mixed results with poping. The down side of course is if you get nothing it might be a female or you may just be doing it wrong!
And at 2' you may have a tought time getting a finger up there. I'd try getting a girl with real small fingers to give it a go.... although finding girl willing to do that can be rough! lol
