LAMAR, Colorado (AP) -- A woman accused of drowning her infant son and 4-year-old daughter in a bathtub told police she had received a "sign" that she should kill the children: a spider crawling across her hand, according to an arrest affidavit released Monday.

Rebekah Amaya, 32, said she is usually afraid of spiders but "felt at peace" when the spider crawled on her, the affidavit said. "She felt it was a sign to set her children free."

She told police she held 5-month-old Gabriel Amaya face up "under the water until he stopped breathing," then did the same thing to 4-year-old Grace Headlee, the affidavit said. Leo Amaya, Gabriel's father, found the children in the bathtub and his wife unconscious when he returned home from work Thursday.

Shortly after the affidavit was released, Rebekah Amaya appeared in Prowers County District Court, where a public defender was appointed. He declined to comment on the case.

Amaya faces first-degree murder charges in Thursday's deaths.

Her formal advisement on the charges was scheduled for November 12.

At first, the woman said her children drowned while taking a bath after she drank three bottles of wine and passed out, according to Detective Jason Malterud of the Lamar Police Department. But she later told the officer she killed them.

i think crimes to children need to be a lot stiffer, she wont get charged with 1st degree murder, 2nd degree and manslaughter are much easier to prove

There is no way i could kill my children (in a hypoyhedical situation) even if they where going to grow up into a horific world, i would let them make that decition. I also dont think i could let the mother of my baby have a abortion, it would just be something that would be almost a physical imposability for me to do.

as for the woman...... my god. it makes me sad to hear about a child dieing from a world in witch they have just come into, i hope this woman gets the proper punishment for her crime

Sick, yes. Awful thing, yes. Calling her a stupid bitch for being sick is just wrong. Call her crazy, call her nuts, call her sick. If she is indeed sick it isn't something she asked to be. I'm not in any way defending what she did, but she obviously was sick....that would be like calling someone with alzheimers or some other disease a stupid bitch for something they could not control. I really hope she gets some intense therapy, not just throwin in a jail cell to fester. That is not justice, it won't solve a single thing. Now if she got ridiculously high and as a consequence, had this sort of reaction, well then it is completely different situation.

Personally, I think the woman's first story sounds more likely (that she was drunk - whether her kids drowned by themselves or she did it is another matter)........... the "a spider told me to" story sounds to me more like an attempt to be able to plead insanity and get away with either serious neglect and manslaughter, or murder.

im in BC and a couple weeks ago i think some man killed his kids because his wife wanted them and they were divorced. he was crazy supposively (or acted that way) and thought it would be better if they were dead to live with his ex wife. terrible things like this happen.

YOu people are fools so lets think if you went crazy and had no control of your thoughts or impulses and one day killed somone you would want to die? Even if you didn't know what you were doing or even remebered . You can't just kill a crazy women for doing something she din't even think was wrong. KIlling kids escpeccially your own is horrible, but she thought she was doing the right thing.
