I was gonna purchase a female 6 inche red-foot from a local pet store but i realized that he had the lumps on his shell. I was wondering if it would be a bad thing to purchase this animal, or if i fed him correctly from now on do u think things will be fine. Thanks,
Joe

Can you be a little more specific? Are you talking about pyramiding? Where each section (scute) is shaped like ....well a pyramid. Or are you talking about irregular bumps? Generally speaking most shell deformities are permanent. Pyramiding is caused by to much protein in the diet. If the tortoise is still growing then as it gets bigger if fed the proper diet it won't be as noticeable. TB

Well the reptile will not be unhealthy. Well yes to the extint that it has pyramiding but other then that it shoud be fine. If you want a red foot and are prepared for the feeding and cleaning when it gets large then you should get it if the pyramiding is not very bad. How old is it?

not sure. I already have one though
There's always some possibility that the excess protein has caused kidney disease, so if you are considering taking this tortoise it's a good idea to have bloodwork done. Crystallized kidneys are reversible by IV or subcutaneous fluid injections in the early stages but once scarred down eventually become fatal, although that can take many years.
If you are not thinking of taking in this tortoise yourself, please consider calling animal control to report this case so they can investigate and see if they think the animal needs medical treatment.
