Hey!
Last night I put 2 pieces of carrot in my mealie rubbermaid and when I came back from school, I dug the pieces that were left and found some huge mealies! Why are these ones so big?
It's a penny besides them.

My albino female was begging me to feed 'em to her so they're now in my albino female :P

Same thing here, we got our colony of mealworms and every so often there are huge ones popping uop. We try to keep those ones and turn them into beetles hoping the babies will be bigger too.

Probably just the supers getting mixed with regulars by the breeders. A super is a regular mealie fed "steroids" to beef them up:D

isn't s super a giant mealworm?
That's what they sale them under here anyways, super and giant are the same in the montreal area.
If you are talking about it, then no they aren't the same, cause a giant mealworm is a different beatle.

i thought they had the ones that they give something to keep them in beetle form?
either way, i had some big ones that size. the gecko loves them
I thought giant mealworms, mealworms and super worms were all different species?

Super mealies and normal mealies come from different beetles. I breed both and they are like a completely different bug.. cept for they look a lot alike : ). There are some bait and tackle stores that sell "giant" mealworms which are the are supposed to be fed something to make them larger than normal.
Normal meal worms are easier to breed and turn into beetles pretty easily.
Supers have to be secluded to their own little container (I use pill bottles) to cause them to pupate into a beetle. They are a pain to breed.

The big mealies were really meal worms. They had the same color as regular meal worms. Super worms are more brown with black.
Amiechann: What substrate do you keep your super worms in?

My insect supplier sells mealies, giant mealies and supers. He has been in business for 20+ years and says that giant mealies are different from regular mealies, but supers are mealworms fed steroid mixed insect feed. King worms are the darker ones with brown and black, but are again completely seperate from mealies. Then you have lesser mealworms which are very small, very dark and breed like crazy. They almost look like the "fuzzy" bugs found in crickets. So many bugs....so little time:D lol
