Personally, I have to wonder if it wouldn't be better for 'Noah's Lost Ark' to turn the cub over to one of the preserves or agencies that have experience dealing with lions and possibly already have a lion population started. (If he's as young as they say he is, he might benefit from a foster mother if there's a possibility of that being available, a lioness with cubs currently.) Then they wouldn't need the 10k to 'build a lion habitat.'

I agree why don't they send it to a rehab place that the states have set up for exotic cats. I'm sure tons of zoos and places with breeding programs would love to take him off their hands.

I can't believe you can buy a lion for $1000 us. From a roadside breeder! Holy crap. That is the saddest part of the story. I agree with Snakecharm there has to be a better place for it.

Where does it state Noah's Lost Ark doesn't have experience dealing with lions and other large cats? Perhaps they are just full up to capacity.

In most zoos and the like, wildcats such as lions are taken from their mother as babies and handraised by people until the age of 6 months. Sometimes by the zoo, sometimes by foster families. This way it creates a safer atmosphere for everyone, as the animals are acclimated to people.

I know a lion keeper who lives in northern ontario, they are awesome animals and require very experienced and knowledgable keepers with huge enclousures for them. Even hand raised (as his are) they are dangerous, I told him about this post and he said he couldn't believe a lion sold for a $1000.00 us, in fact he sold one of his hand raised adults to Walt Disney for $500, 000.00 us and on friday at an exotic animal auction I saw a cub sell for $20, 000.00 cdn!!! $1, 000 us, thats like buying an albino ball python for $500.00! As for zoos they are not always so eager for a MALE lion as the usually already have one and two do NOT get along. Really big egos :)
