Substrate-polyurethane paper?

I was buying meat at the wholesalers and while I was at the counter I seen that he was using a big roll of meat wrap paper to cover the meat. You know that brown paper with wax on one side. It comes in a 12" inches thick roll and is 24in or 18" inches wide. I asked how much it was for the 18 in roll and it was only $15. I found out that the surface is covered with polyurathane on one side. That is the side that touches the meat(the inside). I thought that it would be great substrate rather than newspaper for my enclosures. I would imagine that it would be OK since the Food and Drug government passed it for human use(guidelines are better for humans than animals..lol) Anyways for the past week I have been using the Poly paper and, I tell ya, the cleanup is sooo easy because with the poly side up, it is waterpoof(poo-proof)...I was just wondering if anyone else has ever used this stuff with any ill effects.??? PS...it looks cool too because it is brown rather than the days top headlines as the newspaper(with the newspaper as substrate I put the politician's faces up)

The best substrate to use is CareFresh bedding....... It is made frome recycled newspaper......... I just started using the stuff and I am 100% happy with it....... It even look good....... It clumps up so you can scoop out crap....... Crap does not seap through to the bottom so it last longer then regular beddings...... It can hold humidity or be as dry as a bone........ I would not use anything else now......

I've spoken to several people that have used butcher's paper with great success and I believe that there is even a company that is marketting something very similar as snake substrate. I haven't personally tried it myself, its so much easier right now being the neighbourhoods recycling centre :p Sounds great though, maybe in the future I will give it a try too :)

I have used Carefresh in the past as a substrate for BRB and it served the purpose well. Now I just use it to brumate my rosy boas in and for the spiny mice and two pet rats. Its a bit pricey at $22/bag, I think I would need at least 3-4 just to do my collection once :rolleyes:

It's actually made from 100% virgin wood pulp that would otherwise be burned or thrown in to a landfill. No second hand product, but nothing is cut down for the sole purpose of making it either. Because it is not recycled newpaper (or anything), it is completely free of any inks, dyes, or processing chemicals :)

Oh ..The roll is also 300 ft long or something like that...I will be using it for months....30 enclosures~300ft ..2 ftapprox each = 15 enclosure changes...wow at $20 per roll ....thats 3-4 months ..cheap....and easy..like me..lol

The best substrate depends entirely on the animal that's going to be using it. I wold never say that one substrate is better than another. I use 5 different substrates for all my different animals.

There was a thread with a link to a company that sells the butcher paper in different sizes. Widths and Lenghts. I would like to try it.

Some Butcher or Restaurant Supply store will carry the paper I bought mine off of Helienda's meat store (it was close)but any butcher store should be able to help you....

For most ground boas..BCI, Dumi, Balls,ect, this sub paper would be fine --and for higher humidity snakes BRBS ATB, ETBs not suitable....I keep most on the paper and the rest whatever is best...yes/no
