I just got back from one of the local ***** **** to find out they have monitors for sale now. They have a savanaah and about 5 niles. I am almost positive they don't tell potential buyers about the size potential of either of the two, never mind the temperament of the Niles. I am away from home for the weekend, so the day I get back I am going to go pay them a visit, pretend I am interested in a Nile, and if they don't tell me everything I SHOULD know, I am going to jump down their throat. That is just ridiculous, pet stores should not sell monitors. I see it coming now, some kid gets a nile because they are so cute and colourful at this age. Two years later, its a tank, bites his hand off. The wrong people find out...reptiles are banned from everywhere.

As a former employee of a large pet store, I would advise against loosing your temper on a salesmen.

Most that are hired to the reptile section have no prior experience dealing with or selling reptiles. They are only going upon the information they have been handed. I would suggest calmly discussing your concerns with the Supervisor of the Reptile section...Gather every little bit of information on Niles you can, print it off and give it to the supervisor when you go in.

No matter how hard you argue, they aren't going to stop selling monitors, the least you can do is educate the supervisor, who will then in turn, educate his employees...Making them sell monitors, especially Niles much more responsibly.

Good luck!

Just a reminder to everyone, please refrain from naming any names when disussing stores. sSnakeSs.com doesn't need to headaches of being threatened with lawsuits. I have edited the name out of the initial post. Thank you.

Sadly enough about a year back at the same chain you mentioned, I saw them also selling Niles :( Worst yet, they had a Nile housed with hatchling water dragons, some frogs, and a few house and day geckos  I was unlucky enough to see the Nile take down a little water dragon. Eep. I do agree however with B-Rep, jumping down the employees throat won't do much. Most stores are not willing to pay much, so in turn they often hire young, uneducated (in reptiles) people. Take it up with the management though. It is really quite frightening to see those kind of animals in that situation. Well its scary to see any animals in those places, but nonetheless far more hazardous to have such animals like Niles in the store, both for the animal, the people, and the hobby itself.

One thing i have to say is a nile will force you to learn... one of my first varanids was a very nasty nile, i was even prewarned of their temperment and i still wanted it. I learned alot from this varanid, it tamed down considerably as well. Alot of people will care for the animals, but its unfortunate not 100% of them will.... But lets just hope for the best for those niles!!
