Is anyone a member of the EDMONTON REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN SOCIETY? I just joined (sent in my application) and I'm wonding if it's any good? 15% off at P.J.'s and a newsletter sounds good but what about the shows and monthy meetings? Any good?

I have been a member for a couple years now and group is growing, meetings often have interesting guest speakers (biology, fish/wildlife officers, vets), several family oriented events each year (zoo tour, summer picnic) and two reptile shows a year (more oriented to public education than reptile sales, but have been more vendors lately). The discount at PJ's pets (on reptile stuff only) is worthwhile. Feeder rodents typically for sale at meetings, along with specialty greens for lizard owners.

I really think that these local societies and organizations are going to be necessaties if any sort of reptile/exotic ban comes around in Canada.

Sounds pretty good. Can you tell me more about the discount at PJ's? You say it's only for reptile stuff, does that include aquariums & cages etc.?

Sure can - discount is not always applied consistently, but for the most part we have not been able to use it for any aquariums and haven't bought any other cages there - mostly make our own. It is good for tank lids, heat bulbs, books, magazines, bedding, light fixtures but not for any live animals. I haven't tried buying frozen feeders with the discount, their prices are still too high compared with buying through club members. That is one of the best parts of the club - contact with members who sell just about everything (many breeders of various reptiles) so that you can get better quality stock at much lower prices than the pet stores.
Forgot to mention that the club also has a great library of reptile magazines, books and tapes that members can borrow.
I am at most meetings, so will look for you at the August one - hope our new Jungle carpet will have shed and he will be there for "show and tell".
