I am a little confused as to what the name vermiculite is attached to. My mom says it's potting soil-type stuff but people tell me it's a moss could someone post a pic?

Vermiculite can be found in most garden departments (walmart, canadian tire, etc). It's not moss, and it's not potting soil... lol. It can be mixed in with potting soil though... It'll say right on the bag what it is. I'll see if I can find a pic for you...

Vermiculite is actually mined(from the ground) and is simply processed Mica.
It is light weight and somewhat fluffy when dry. It holds many times its own weight in water and this is what makes it useful as a plant soil additive and an incubation medium. It can contain small levels of asbestos as its mined from similar ore bodies, but this is of little concern. You should be careful not it inhale the dust when working with it in its dry form.
