View Full Version : weird catipillar things in the crix boxes

Hey I have noticed weird cararpiller type bugs in the cricket boxes latly. After putting the crickets in there bin I noticed a week later I had a crazy amount of dead crickets way more then usual and the food bowl I keep in it was infested with those little caterpillar things. Could the dead crickets and the caterpillar things be linked? and what the heck are those things?

are they brown , small and sorta hairy?

ya, i've found 'em thrivin' on dead crickets... they reproduce like crazy... i've used the little buggers to feed some of my hardier taods in the past... to prevent the problem, clean the cricket bin... and try to keep it as clean as possible...

this is not based on facts, jus' experience...

I think they're some kind of larvae. Possibly a type of moth. not 100% sure, But i dont think its anything to worry about. I've seen these as well.

I always refer to them as bonus bugs...lol :p There are several different kinds of bonus bugs that seem to come with crickets, some suppliers have cleaner crix than others. If you aren't comfortable with them, you can try giving another supplier a shot.

coincidentally i bought a bag of pin heads today and it had one of the caterpillar guys in it.. the store person said that it's not uncommon and kinda shrugged it off. but it was the first time i found one in my bag im just gonna throw it outside.

Hmmm...I've never seen those in the cricket bins at work, but, we always keep them really clean...especially with me working there. :D I wouldn't be too worried about larvae turning up anyway as that's just more food for your herps. :)

I cannot remember the name of them, exept to say that they are "clean up" bugs. They eat rotting debris and things like that which make them beneficial in insect colonies. You actually want them in your bugs to keep things like bacteria and mold from taking over. Odd, but true!:D
