Best Digi Cam Under $1000 Can

I'm looking to purchase a digital camera and was wondering out of the hundreds, what is the best brand/model for around $1000.00 Canadian. If you could all give me your opinion and or pics taken with the camera it would be a HUGE help.

There were some discussions about the best value for digital cameras on this site a few months ago. Try a search. It also helps to know what you want to do with it. For reptiles you want a camera with a macro mode that can focus at a very short distance. If you just want to upload your pics and view them on the computer/internet then you don't need more than 2 or 3 MP. If you plan on printing your pics at a size like 8x10 or bigger (with superb quality) then you should look at 4 or more MP.

I think some of the best values are Canon A series cameras. Fuji has some good ones too. Olympus also has good prices.

I got a fujifinepix S304. Works like a charm. Was 360 euro here, so thats about *calculating*564 canadian

I would recommend Nikon. Either the older discontinued 900 series, or the newer 3 mp series. I would recommend the Nikon 5400 5mp but I think that is a little out of your price range ($1100-$1200.00)

After tons of research i went with a Canon G3, that is now at $899. Its a great camera, although its not really a true point and shoot camera. If thats what your looking for, then look at something at $500 and less. Unless you shoot with manual modes, you will not get what you want. Infact, unless you use manual modes, its not worth it at all, its a pro camera that has so many features your head will spin...but if you dont understand them, its a waste. It does amazing macros, has a great zoom and is solid built. Mine will take over 1000 pics on a charge. I have a very large memory card, 1G, and a 512mb as well. The cards are about $500 for the 1g, and the 512 i think was $280 or something. Its the official Camera of the site, and we have always used Canons. There is comprable cameras on the market, but we like this one due to the fact that it uses a camcorder battery...which equals long life, and more pics on a charge. I have no real complaints about the camera other then although i am experienced, i do find setting the modes a bit complex at times. Im getting better, but still not 100% where i should be. Here is some example pics i grabbed real quick to show you its capibilities. If your in the market, Nikon also had good lens technology...canon and Nikon are the kings of the camera world as far as digital, the rest have their features etc..it depends on who your loyal to :)

This next one, is a full out zoom. 4x digital, and 14x optical...and usually most digital cameras dont do optical zoom really well.

the HP 850 is 4.1MP 8x zoom optic and 7x numerique
total zoom 56x and it cost 890$cn at (staples business depot)
or ( bureau en gros )

Both the Nikon and the Canon G series is the only cameras I would buy. The macro distance on the Nikon is insanely close.

The camera by itself is around $1100-$1200.00

If I had the money I would buy a Canon 10D...it would shame all of the cameras mentioned. Of course it's a semi-pro digital SLR so it's quite diferent than those mentioned. Canon did just release the new Digital Rebel...same sensor as the 10D but it's $1000 cheaper, still $1500 CDN though.

Has anyone used the 3.2MP Sony Mavica that burns to the small CD-R? I am looking at buying one of them. They run about $400 USD.

In my mind the way sony stores their picture files is kind of hokey. Those cds are expensive and cannot be reused. Same with their memory stick. I also didn't like it when they used 3 1/2" discs. I would never buy a sony camera, but that is just my opinion.

You mean their media is hokey? I find it very appealing. You can fit 80+ pictures on one disk that cost less than $2 USD. The disks small size make them very portable. I would like to talk to somone who actually has one, but I appreciate your input. Barry

Fro under 1000 cdn, you could get the olympus c 5050 somewhere like dumoulin in quebec or something.
very good camera. Also the c 4000 ultra zoom by olympus is an other great choice.

We have a Sony CD 300 Mavica and I love it. The model you're thinking of is the CD 350 (it's smaller and lighter). Contrary to Greg Wests beliefs you can reuse the media if you use CD-RW discs (you can get ten 180 meg discs for about 30 Canadian dollars I think). I love the CD Mavica, the lens is awesome (with out a good lens it doesn't matter how many megapixals you have) and the only camera I would switch to would be one of the digital rebels that take regular canon lenses (because we happen to have a bunch) at 6 or more megapixals, but they aren't cheap.

Thanks Lisa. About 4yrs ago I bought one of the first Mavicas that took the floppys but that was back when no one new what an MP was Ha!
