land snails

is it illegal to own african land snails in Canada (Ontario in particular)? Tons of people have them as pets in the UK, but from what I hear it's illegal to have them in Canada and the US. I was wondering if anyone knew for sure

I am almost possitive its perfectly legal .. although I really am not sure why you would want some .. There not my fav. in the world but I guess they can be kinda cute?

They are interesting creatures, but completely illegal to own in Ontario as they are considered a pest animal. They eat everything in their path and reproduce like crazy!

Is it just Ottawa that prohibits the keeping of them? I had spoeken to a number of people that had said they were legal to own in Ontario. And have been considering getting one myself.

well I hope they aren't illegal in ontario, 'cause I've got 2 of them... I think they're fabulous!! I can see how they'd be considered a nuisance though, they're 2 inches long each (and they're less than 5 months old) and grow about 1cm every 3 wks ( 1cm of shell growth, not length). Also, the pair of them can go through a whole english cucumber in about a week to a week and a half, they're voracious!!!

I though they were legal .. I maybey wrong .. Tx Trace .. but as Linds said Its probably one of those Ottawa by-laws (ours are realy demented and stupid)... It does not automatically apply to all of Ontario .. check you own city by-laws .. that is if you have any.

I didn't take any Panthers from Bob (yet) but rescued another Veiled today.
