Hello

I cant make a choise, for weeks I;ve been thinking about this.

I have the space for a burmese, or a green iguana plus I have got space for an other snake...

I've decided that I wont take on a burmese, simply because I am in a wheelchair and.. its just not realistic although I am totally in love with thoose animals..

Then I started thinkng about a bcc or bci but I dont know if that is such a smart idea, because someone told me boa's are in general stronger then pythons ( btw I have 1 ball and 1 gtp )

Long ago, we used to have a bcc but I was 4 or 5 .. and not in a wheelchair.. so... anyway

has anyone got an idea what snake would fit me. :P

A green iguana, would be kinda perfect.. as I have 24 hours a day to spend time with him/her... plus I am strong in my arms... but I cant decide so thats why I post this question... oh one thing if this is in the wrong...ehm .. place on the forum.. sorrrrrrrryyyy didnt know where 2 put it

:)

no its 6 months old. plus I dont have the money to buy an adult :(

I am in a wheelchair because I am sick :P.. sorry.. I dont think I can explain in english.. when I was 13 I got ill.. and after a few years in hospitals and alot of research and being a test bunny.. they knew what I had.. its a rare desease called ED... it destroys one of your gene's.. and your dna is mixed up and bla bla bla... it effect pretty much your whole body but with me mostly my heart and lower back

Ah, Sorry to hear that...

But, I would say... instead of a green iguana.. varanids are always avaliable =D. And like Jay said... I would grab a pair for one of your already owned snakes. Breeding is great =D, and puts a little cash into your pocket hehe

I would say, instead of a Green Iguana, get a Savanna Monitor :) As for a snake, why not go with a Brazilian Rainbow Boa? They're gorgeous!

You seem to be pretty intelligent; you know what your capabilities are and what you are able to take care of. A lot a people would buy things without realizing what's involved.

If you want a b.c.c or b.c.i go with a hog island they are smaller. But I think an iguana is not a bad choice either.

Honestly, Green Iguanas are a pet you must be DEVOTED with or else you'll hate having one. I personally will never ever have another Green Iguana after my Roxy passes away (heaven forbid)

They eat so much food, crap a lot, have the ability to ruin things including the skin on your arms and neck, they are powerful, they have a "I am the boss" attitude in most cases and need constant affection and time spent with them.

Not saying they have no good points though! Just with Green Iguanas, there is as much bad as good. They can be intelligent, emotional amazing creatures, and Roxy gives me a laugh everyday :D

I quess every animal has its "downsides" but I also believe that one shouldnt start on animals if your not prepared to clean up after them.

every animal wether its a cat, dog or snake iguana or chameleon... they all need to do "there buisness" one more then the other but.. yea well I really think that if it bother one, one shouldnt have started with animals in the first place

as for time.. I am at home 24 hours a day..

I agree with Jenn--I'm a huge BRB fan. I can't stand iguanas, though...they are pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to getting a nice, handleable one, although it was really all the crapping that prejudiced me against them. I know that you should be prepared to clean up after an animal, but there is just SO MUCH runny crap with an iguana.

Soooo, my vote is for BRB, or if you can't get one of those, is a uromastyx a possibility? I love those little guys.

uromastyx are indeed cute.. but again I havent got a clue how to get one...

Of course you should be prepared. But most people, even after research, don't understand what actually OWNING a Green Iguana is like.

Like I mentioned before, of course its more than worth it to most people, and although I won't ever have another Green Iguana, I most certainly treat Roxy (my current iguana, 5 feet, 6 years) like a reptile Queen. :D

But the practical side is that if you cannot handle a very rough 5 foot lizard who literally needs a stable sized cage, craps WAY more and messier than a snake of decent size, and eats like a growing child then you shouldn't have a Green Iguana. Roxy eats normally 21-30 full plate sized portions of food per week. That's two-three plates per day of a variety of greens and veggies. That's a lot for some people, including me. I do it of course though! :D

Anyways good luck making your choice< you may be the type of person who will enjoy your green igiuana and realize that they are indeed worth the trouble. But its always nice to know beforehand what you are getting into :D

I am also in a wheelchair, although just on my bad days, due to a severe autoimmune disease. My green iguanas have been one of my great joys as they enjoy climbing my chair to come and get attention. I love my snakes too but igs that are well socialized are actually companions rather than just part of a collection. Gizmo loves to drape herself across the handles and snuggle against my shoulders.

Just watch out for those tails under your wheels!

so.. I've decided its gonna be an iguana... that what made me decide is that my neighbours son in law had an iguana .. and they just wanted to "throw" it away :O:O:O I couldnt believe it.. I heard it this morning when I was outside with one of my snakes.. and my neighbour made a comment about reptiles and told me that story.. ... and so it came that I asked her for her son in laws phone number...

so I rang and we talked and he said.. sure come and get the nasty animal .. and thats what I did :D
I went and got that poor animal... its a little beauty and sooo sweet.. well... it still needs taming...

went to a vet with Lizzy and they there liz went trough some test and some pics.. and nothing was wrong with Liz :D

very stressed though.. hands are an absolut NONO... but I'll work on that.. plenty of time.. right now she is basking in her new enclosure had some food... and looks quit happy...

btw.. is a 500 gal enclosure big enough for Liz 2 grow up in... The svl lenght is 8 inch ..next spring my dad will start on the big enclosure.. but I think for that time.. its big enough

Good call on getting a rescue and not buying a young one...there are so many in need of homes. 500 gal sounds huge, but what part of it is 8 inches? I don't get it.

Congrats to you and Lizzy! Glad to hear that you're excited about her.

from snout to vent... ( place where the tail begains ).. according to that guy Liz was around 1 years of age....

well.. 500 sounds.... huge but for how long :P its still a very small iguana .. but oh well... Liz seems to be feeling at home.. Liz has eaten and been exploring the enclosure... some part of it is still unavailable to liz, because other wise it would just be way 2 large at the moment

oh here is a little pic of Liz on the way home ( made a box with some stuff in it so Liz could climb a bit )

cute! she looks like a sweetie! I don't really know much about iguana enclosures, but what is the length/width/height of the 500? I can't even really fathom that.

An ideal cage for an adult iguana is at least 2 meters tall, 2 meters wide and 1.75 meters deep. Bigger is obviously better and they do best with a dedicated room rather than a cage. Height for climbing is essential!

What a cutie. And a 500 gal that I seen was big enough to put a full grown man in, WITH scuba gear (or was that a 750 gal tank?) with water in there.....so if it is as big as I THINK, then it will probably be good for a while. Don't know much about iguanas though........I'm glad little lizzy is in a good home! :)

its 70 cm deep, 180 long and 1.50 high

but when grown up or .. larger and ... a bit more.. tame .. there is an entire room available.. wich is 4 by 3 by 2.. or something like that.. We've got space enough now...

I am really happy with Liz... but got to go now... need to buy food and seeds to plant my own little veggie garden

Wow, that is huge! Did you mean 150 cm high? or 1.50 high?

ikke
09-23-03, 03:15 PM
oops 150 cm high..

btw.. dunno why this gy wanted to get rid of Liz, today Liz ate out of my hand and after dinner Liz decided my hand looked good enough to bask on.. :P
