View Full Version : Box turtles
My friend has 4 box turtles, he claimes he got them near my local creek / woods.
I want to get me a box turtle as well. I had one as a kid but i want another one so i was wonering how i sould go about finding one in my woods.
Wild capture is a bad thing to do. It depletes your local turtle population. Please tell your friend to release the box turtles, and please do not try to catch one yourself. Besides, Wild caught turtles tend to not do well in captivity either.
Also, it's almost 100% likely that your local box turtle species is illegal in your state, and you could be fined a great sum of money.

yea i agree dont go off and take a tort off its land. Its to mean. The tort is completly free and then you make it have to live its life in a container. Not morally right, you can just buy one and i agree with icex, wc anything doesnt usually do well in captivity. Plus you will probably spend lots of money on vet bills which sux.
I definitely agree with above make the ethical and economical choice and buy a captive bred turtle. Like Bartman said it could save you a lot of money treating parasites and pathogens that pop up in wild caughts kept captive.

It is assumed you are in the US, b/c in Canada we don't just pick up a couple of bxies in the local woods - I only wish. :)
Box turtles are bred in large numbers and you can buy very cheaply infact in the US. I just took a look at another popular herp forum and I found four different breeders selling CB ornate boxie hacthlings for US$25!!!! That is so cheap. If you need the link, give me a PM. I wish we can get boxies for $25 up here in Canada - lol!!!:D :( :D :( Good luck.
Cheers,
JJ;)

I'll have to disagree, I have had many a wild caught turtles from one reason or another and all of them adapted well to the new living situations. I will say most do not do well because the people catching them or recieving them do not know the animal or its specified care..
If you are on the Eastern Shore states, It's likely you wil be fined if caught with the turtles; Many other places as well.
If money isnt an option. buy one. Im not against collecting under reasonable catches and the such, but Box tutles are fairing pretty hard as it is and if you can get one for 10 bucks then do it. No need to pose a deeper threat to an animals population, especially if you catch a female..

From everything I have read a box turtle that has been in capivity cannot be released unless it is released in the same location it was caught. Also after extended time in capivity they lose their fear of things and would not survive more than a couple of days in the wild. They fear no predators and therefore do not retreat into their shells until too late. A friend of mine has a box turtle that will play with his cats.
