View Full Version : Confused with different Albinos...

recently, in another thread, I learned that the "Whitesmoke Albino Ball Python" is a co-dominant or dominant trait (I'm not sure if it is known for certain which one it is at this point, but it is not recessive from what I was told). This got me going a bit on different albinos... I noticed that there are:

1) albino ball pythons
2) high-contrast albino ball pythons
3) faded albino ball pythons
4) whitesmoke albino ball python

What I want to know, is what is the difference between the 3 first mentioned types? I thought they were always the same trait, but depended only on selective breeding (i.e. how much yellow was bred in with the albino trait).

This would be nice for me to know because I've purchased a pair of adult het-albinos, but I can't be sure what type of albino. My male is fair colored (but I wouldn't consider it a high-yellow animal personally) and my female almost looks like a green-ghost or axanthic... almost no yellow (which is probably not that great for breeding nice albinos I would think). One was apparently from Bob Clark and the other apparently from Professional Breeders. That's all I know. What kind of offspring should I expect?

Thank you for any input on this subject.

Bristen.

I think your right about the first three. I believe that they are all caused by one recesive gene and selective breeding. As for he white smoke I'm not sure. Have you put this question out to the "Big" american breeders?

Bristen,

The first 3 are all the same mutation.....the albino is just line bred to bring out different traits (such as high contrast or fading).

The White Smoke (also called a "Banana Ball") has been produced by 2 people.....NERD and Will Sloth (I know I didn't spell his last name right but it's close). Will Sloth just produced a clutch of "Banana" Balls that were 100% het for Clown and he sold 1 female for $50,000 US (to Designer Snakes). They are a really neat looking ball, but they aren't compatable with the other lines of albino out their.

That's too bad.. I was kind of hoping I was wrong.. that would mean that it would of been possible for me to produce better looking albinos heh! Judging by the colors of my adults, sure looks like they are going to be the "faded albino" type . I know about the white smoke albino.. that one is very different and easily reconized - it definately deserved a different name. And no I did not ask anybody else, I only posted here on "www.ssnakess.com"...

I told you so!!! Hopefully she'll produce for ya! You're lucky you got her 'cause I really liked her... :( Oh well, at least she won't be too far away ;)

ps: my new pair of adults have not yet started to eat.. argh! I've tried frozen/thawed, tease-feeding, live, etc... the female seems to be getting very hungry and I figure it's just a matter of time before she start eating.. just too bad it's this time of year because I'll have to break her off food around November (she'll probably stop on her own anyways)... oh well, I'll keep you posted :)

I'm sorry to hear that :( Oh well, even if I produce faded albinos, they are the best type to use if one wants to create snows anyways so maybe they will be not that hard to sell :)

Thanks... I understood from your previous post (in the other thread) that it was not compatible with the other trait. $50K USD.. humm.. that's more than half the value of my new house I just built! Too bad something like that wouldn't "pop up" in my clutches.. I could handle having my house paid off.. I'd have more money to buy snakes!! ;)

Thanks for the reply.
