Hey, i was wondering if anyone here rides a bike, if so what bike?
Im thinking about getting a bike for next summer. Im a first time rider and i want a Suzuki GSX R 600, but im hearing that racing bikes shouldnt be a first bike :( So im leaning towards a Suzuki SV 650S. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

My first bike was a Honda Nighthawk, I can't say I had many complaints. I got it so I could learn how to do all the work on it myself, and if I did do something wrong, I wasn't messing up a $10, 000.00 bike. Oh and no, I didn't screw the bike up. :) I actually made a few improvements.

Yep... this is my 3rd season with it :D
If I was you... I would keep off the 401 with your bike when you get it... you are begging to become roadkill riding the 401

I have had many motorcycles. My last one was a Susuki Volusia, but I sold it last year. I am trying to decide what to get next...I am leaning towards a Honda Goldwing 1800 (for those long road trips I like to take), or a Honda VTX 1800 (just a big hulking bike!). Personally I hate crotch rockets (racing bike lookalikes), but that could be because I am 6 foot tall and just shy of 300 lbs! Laying on my belly and sticking my *** up in the air to ride a bike is not my idea of comfort!!

I have a Kawisaki '81 gpz550. It runs great and its ugly enuff not to care if i drop it. Bought it last summer. You dont want to buy a $10,000 bike for your first bike, cause u might have a heart attack watching your new bike slide accross the asphalt (sparks and all)

it is probably not too good of an idea to get a Crotch Rocket for your first bike, i have been riding for about 3 years and love it (altho i am not "legally" allowed to) but the first bike i rode was a 1995??? Suzuki GSX 1100G now this bike is the farthest thing from a "starter" this bike has almost a identical engine to the bandit but it is TOP HEAVY AS HELL!! it is a sport/cruiser. it is a HORRIBLE bike to start off on, but i survived, also your hight and weight can play a factor in the bike u start off in, i am BIG for my age (6'2 and 230 pounds) so i would manage that bike much better than say someone who is 5'5 and 130 pounds, lol. but i would chose wisely and i know where i live there are courses that teach u how to ride that are 2 days and if u complete it u get your license ;) and they supply Honda 250cc bike (couldn't tell u witch one off hand, probly a rebel) but good luck with your new "toy" there alot of fun :D

I have had a few bikes as well. My first was a Honda 400 Custom. Then I had a Yamaha 350 something or other. Then was my 450 Kawasaki LTD (my fave til I blew it up !!! LOL). Last one was another LTD tho a bit smaller (400??). Am looking to get a 550 or 650 Shadow or Maxim next year. All of these would have made greater starter bikes. Small enough to pick up by yourself (that's a big deal to a 5'6" female; LOL); easy to work on; not expensive to buy or run & all were not top heavy but rather were lowrider styled bikes with excellent balance (also important to us small to average size women !!!). I would recommend any of that style to start with. Maybe a bit bigger model for a gent tho !! Happy puttin' !!

I think I started riding when I was 6 and the list of bikes is too long to post here. Everything from singles to multis from 50 cc to 1000 cc and after 36 years I am still walking and talking. My current is an 2001 HD Sportster, that I wish I has more time to drive. Here's my baby. I may consider selling it though.

I also agree that you should never start on a crotch rocket. Way too much bike, will get you in trouble or killed. Get a bike you can learn on first, as there is a lot more to riding than just making the thing stop and go. Find a nice cheap used bike 500cc is ideal. And remember, just like with snakes, there are two types of motorcycle riders, those who have dropped it (crashed) and those who are going to.
I started on an '83 GS400E suzuki.

I Used To work in a Bike parts shop ripping apart Old bike and parting them out The owner did Some custom Work on harley's on the side as well I have ridden My fair share of bike's And by far super bikes Are the most fun (although the V-rod has a Slightly modded super bike engine in it so it Flys) A ninja maybe what you want But you have to respect the bike Because if you give it a chance it will kill you .super bikes arent fun to drive in traffic jam's either Since You lean to turn and they dont ride right unless your past 100 or so Flying down the highway is where you want to ride but in the city its no fun Keep that in mind

Heres another,riding with the club.
R1's are safe rides dude... I personally dont own a bike, probably wont, but I have driven amny dirbikes ranging from 50 CC's to 250CC I think it was... I've had a pretty bad accident on my buddy's old 90 CC Suzuki X-Country bike before... and since then I haven't mounted on a bike with a motor, except my ATV, but my babies got four wheels, not two :) I find it easier to ride :)

Fanmaninacan,
I know where i live you can take some courses and upoun completion they will give you a paper that u can take down to the DMV to get your lincens with out haveing to take a drivers test, im not shure what the laws are like in canada, but thats here in texas,
Darlene

In Canada they offer programs that teach you how to ride, teach you safety, even some minor maintenance & will get you your license through them as well (unless you are really totally unteachable!). Call your local DMV to see what ones are available in your area. They are similar to the high school Drivers' Ed programs & will also help with the cost of insurance on your bike. I highly recommend them. I took one even after learning to ride with my father who was a motor cycle policeman & after having grown up riding with him. They are well worth the money which is about $300.00 down here in my area. You get your fee back in saved insurance costs often in the first couple of years.
P.S. Most supply the bikes to learn on as well so you don't need your own for the course.

Here are some pics of the bikes i was looking at but i think im going to go with the SV 650, it looks sporty and its a hell of a lot cheaper than the GSX R 600 on insurance.
This is the GSX R 600

I have a Yamaha WR450 (dirt bike) that has been supermotarded (17" wheels/tires, street legal). I just sold a Yamaha YZF-R1. I've had many sportbikes, starting with a 1992 Honda CB900F roadracer, then a few GSXR's ( 2 '86, '88,'90,'95, Track bikes all). First bike? Get a used dirt bike and learn to ride it well. Then get the SV, great bike, you won't outgrow it. I've ridden them on the track, they rock! If you are going for image, go ahead and buy a gixxer. They don't make good street bikes. They are designed for the track. They are uncomfortable on long rides. If you want to ride a gixxer like it was intended to be ridden, go to track days at a track near you. Otherwise, you will just end up another statistic. Or the owner of another trashed 'Zook (if you are lucky).

LMAO too true!! I already got my crash out of my system so hopefully I won't have another.
Managed to escape with a dislocated shoulder, a shattered collar bone, some bruised ribs and a little bit of scarring on my back... I became "cool" at the bike shop when I rode out on my bike 2 weeks later while still all strapped up :D
I am a super-human healer because I got a clean bill of health and was back in the gym lifting weights after only a month... the doc couldnt believe how quick my bones mended.

I am in the middle of building a chopper...... Hopefully it will be done by next summer......... I am a huge Harley Davidson fan........

Iguanakikembood, Im going to take a bike course before i get my bike. Im 98% sure that im going to get the SV 650, but my question is can anyone ride a GSX R for a first bike after training lessons and not get themselves hurt, as long as you respect what the bike can do........right? It seems that there are a lot of first time riders on racing bikes......or is that just me. lol
Thanks

I LOVE riding motorcycles. I haven't had the opportunity to ride in a few years. I'm going to try and get my bike liscence sometime in the next year or so. I started on dirt bikes and went from there. I would've preferred the last one I rode to be a Harley, but, when you're borrowing machines from friends, you can't be too picky. ;)
