A question for other insomniacs out there: what do you do when you can't sleep? I'm running out of ideas, and being a bored insomniac is worse than being the normal kind. Thought I'd check to see if anyone has new ideas they'd like to share

Basically I lay in bed hoping and praying for sleep. My insomnia is a stange one. If I know I have no reason to wake up early then I sleep fine, but if I know I need to be up at a certain time then I will be lucky to sleep 2-3 hours. Often even less. I would like to get up and do something, but all that'll accomplish is me not even getting 2-3 hours!

My sister BF is kind of an insomniac. Well he hasnt been diagnosed one and he doesnt think he is one but he gets NO sleep at all, and i mean NOO sleep. He always tells me stories about things he does, like draw, drive around and just try to figure things out. He has become terribly smart and figures out everything, like magic tricks and stuff like that. He knows everything lol and he even figured out a way to beet a certain game at a casino but thats our little secret and it has nothing to do with card counting..MUAH HAHAHAHA lol

I play computer games when I can't sleep. I am much like Julie...when I have to get up early, I will try and try but get like NO sleep. If I dont have to get up, man, I am in bed for 14 hours.

Sniper, that won't help to sleep at all, it increases your oxygen flow in your system and energises you up.

If I play games when I can't sleep, I am up till 7 or 9 am playing counter-strike
lolol
so what I do is put some soft music on and just listen to it in the dark

Counter strike rawks so hard...

Yea, but usually if Im up at 2-4am...which is around the time I usually get in...If Im not tired by then, I wont sleep...

Drawing... hey, there's something! I totally suck at it maybe I can learn how to actually do it without repetitive crumpling and cursing lol. Need a break from that proportional thermostat I've been designing anyways.

Julie, what worked for me for like a month or two was reading up on quantum mechanics on the net... you know, university papers and the like. Doesn't work for me any more, but when it did I could barely make it back into the sack in time :)

LOL!! So true!

I usually read the newspaper or watch some really boring t.v. show. Worst comes to worst, I listen to music in the dark or just stare at the ceiling in my room lol.

I close my eyes and concentrate on slow breathing. Also pretending to sleep often leads to sleep.

Bryce,

The Chron only works like that if you do it 3-4 hours before you want to sleep because, as I'm sure you know, it is a stimulant. For that reason it is useless to an insomniac who wants to go to sleep right away. Of course if you've already given up on sleep for the night then light et up mon! Then come on here and irritate people with senseless jabber. I've been an insomniac for over 10 years myself, been to the sleep clinic and all that too. I find the best cure, if it goes on for days and days, is to just say f*** it one night and stay up. Occupy yourself (may I suggest throwing some nail polish on your left hand and then you get a blanket ok? then what you do.... oh wait this is a little personal) until you would have to get up and get ready for work. Then just go on as normal except with more coffee. By the time that night comes along you'll be so bloody tired and crazy that you'll pass right out. It sounds harder than it is. You get used to the hallucinations (black shadow demons riding by on tricycles, armed with huge daggers in your peripheral vision, I hate those things) and it get's to be almost fun in a self-destructive kinda way.

I hit the ceiling as hard as I can over and over while screaming at it in hopes that the noisy neighbours with heavy feet will shut the f**k up so I can get some sleep!!

All I hear is stomp stomp stomp stomp... its a one bedroom apartment!!! Honestly... how the hell can they do so much walking??! I am a big guy and I dont make any noise when I walk so sure as hell they can quiet down too!! GRRRR ok my rant is over... thats how I get to sleep :D

Read a book or sometimes pop a tylenol simply sleep. It's a lot safer and less addicting than prescription sleep aids but I don't know if it's strong enough for true insomnia. But I don't really get insomnia these days. Back in college I had a slightly less legal method of getting shuteye.

Mostly read or sometimes work out to make myself a little more tired. I usually try to wake my wife up too. I figure if I can't sleep why should she.

I have had this problem for probly over 10 years... I just found my little miracal drug. I will never go another night without it. I used to be more like Linds not being able to sleep i would lay there for hours tossing and turning then if i did get to sleep i would have realistic nightmare. Horrible horrible sleeping. Thank god that all changed. There are these pills called "melentonin" (sp) no not the melen in skin. You take them about a half hour before you go to bed. Having my problems sleeping for years i was highly skeptic that this little pill that you can buy at walgreens or walmart can help me sleep. But it works great 5 mins after i hit the bed i'm out. If you have problems take this pill for one week and you will notice a HUGE difference. I've been taking them for a few weeks now and i have noticed a change. Now i can't go to bed without taking one. If i don't then i know i'll be tossing and turning until i get up and take that pill.

I was a born insomniac. For longer than I can remember I haven't been able to sleep. I'm told that as young as two and three I would walk in to my parents room in the middle of the night and when they would ask why I wasn't sleeping, I would respond "I don't know how to sleep". LOL... I remember thinking there was some trick people weren't telling me about :p

My dad used to take them. I believe these pills are now banned in Canada?

Recently i filled up an application for 30 hours per day...simply insomnia, don't ever make it with me, because i get a few hours of sleep every day...there are so much to do every night...whenever i cannot sleep -even for those few hours- is because i am worring for one or more of my herps.
A few days ago when i get the CRB in poor condition from a guy, i was getting up every hour for peeking, just to see if she is alright.
I hate sleeping but it's something that must be done :( :D

Whenever I try to meditate, you know clear your mind and all that stuff, concentrate on breathing, I find myself really tired, then if I try to stay awake, I get really really tired.......and just fall asleep....

Bryce Masuk, I totally agree, smokeing a joint, or a couple hits from the bong tis the only thing that gets me to sleep.
Must be the shits out there... getting to choose from indeca to sativa, I'm gonna move to BC someday:):):):)

I used to take a eep medication called Imovane, I would only have to take 1/2 of the small blue pill and 15 minutes later..zzzZZZ. They're highly addictive, so, I just take a Extra Strength Sleep Aid instead (All it is, is a powerful hit of antihistamine). That's a last resort if my reading (which I mentioned earlier) doesn't do the trick.

Linds,

Do you know why melintonin was banned. Is it harmful. I don't want to take anything that will cause other problems. I just know it helps me sleep i really don't think i could sleep without them now.

I have close to 10 years to take any medicine. I hate them. I prefer to stay with my condition -when i am ill (very rarely happens) and let the immunizer do the work. With this way i am stronger every year.

I usually end up reading until I can't keep my eyes open any longer... lol. That always works for me, although obviously it doesn't really help in getting to sleep earlier...
