I see on this site every so often the word "Het" and some other words describing a snake. What exactly does that mean? How does one identify a snake as being that? On the post with 100% Het, that snake looks very similar to mine, but i think mine is just a normal bally.
Also, what's the deal with numbers in front of the animal, like 1.0 Ball, etc.?
I think that's it until I think of any others. Thanks...
The term "het" is short for "heterozygous", which is a word commonly used in genetics. It's a little complicated to explain, but if you're interested, I can elaborate for you. Basically, it just means that the snake carries that particular trait but does not show it. For example, if a ball is het for albinism, that means that while the snake isn't albino, it carries the trait for albinism. Like I said, I could give you a lot more detailed explanation if you want it.
The numbers just tell what sex the snakes are, for example:
1.2.3 means that you have 1 male, 2 females, and 3 for which the sex is unknown
0.2.0 means that you have no males, 2 females and no unsexed snakes.
Hope that helps!

P.S. I have 1.0.0 okeetee corn snake...I'm just "ball-curious" ;)

I said I have been picking up snakes since I was 9, I never said anything about knowing the "basic foundations of herp keeping" Back then it was just something to do to keep me busy, but now, since I own a ball python, I thought I'd get more involved and learn more about the hobby and stuff. LOL, just when I thought I was finished with one debate I get pulled into another one here. Anything else you would to debate, go ahead, I am ready! Take your best shot!
normal x morph = 100% het
het x het = 66% het
het x normal = 50% het
Since hets look identical to normals, there's no way of knowing by appearance. When purchasing hets you should get accompanying paperwork and only buy from very reputable sources.

this is true, but misleading at the same time. If you breed a 100% het to a normal animal, the offspring will be 50% het. That part is true. That does not mean thoug, that all the animals are 50% het. It means half are 100% het. So of 10 babies, maybe only 5 will actually be heterozygous for the trait. So keep in mind, if someone is selling an animal that is 50% het, you have a 50/50 shot of actually getting an animal that is worth something. It could just be a regular.
