Snakedude, Only 5 more? awwww! poor you hahaha!
Myself I got a really cool looking male BP to go with my growing female. They should be getting married in about a year I figure. No pics though because I walked around in a snake-daze all bloody day without even thinking about my digi camera in my hand. I wish I had thought to take a few of that pie bald BP and the Mojave at another table, oh well. Guess I was a little overwhelmed, both by the all the cool stuff and the unusual occurance of being in a room where I'm not the only weird snake person.

Darn!!! Here I thought you were drooling over the Peanut Butter 'n' Chocolate Creme Oreos I was munching on!! If I'd known it was over animals, I wouldn't have felt guilty and shared the Oreos with you ;)

I got an adult trio of leos -- Male Las Vegas Albino het patternless, and two double het LV and Patternless females. So much for my willpower.

All those animals are amazing, and congrats to everyone on their new additions, but it doesn't really seem like many animals were moved/sold at this show. Any reason for this? Is the industry slow out in Ontario right now? Are people simply not buying animals right now?

Lisa
09-08-03, 12:18 AM
We were short on funds but still managed to get 2 corn snakes (pics to follow) from Simon (he's such a nice guy) and a tshirt for katey as she couldn't make it. I saw a lot of things I wanted but not having the funds I couldn't get (anyways, got alot of stuff the last show).

Its because nobody can afford to... many breeders are charging almost as much as pet shops now.

I picked up 1.1 sub adult u.phantasticus, the male is awesome but he has a slightly kinked tail so the only female he's going to see is me. ;) I think sales at the show might have been slow because you can't exactly impulse buy with alot of species and people in general now have easy access to most types of herps throughout the year, so you don't have to wait for an expo to find what you are looking for. But who knows? maybe we're all just broke after all. :P

MouseKilla
09-08-03, 10:22 AM
Jeff,

This was my first expo but a couple things struck me that may help explain slow sales. The first thing I noticed looking around was that there were a lot of just-hatched-yesterday looking snakes, particularily some of the corns and a few hogs, seriously some of them looked like they hadn't had their first shed or meal. I have made the mistake in the past of buying them at that size and they are incredibly hard to find suitable food for in my experience. I don't buy anything that small anymore and as I said there seemed to be a lot of that kind of stuff. The other thing was variety. While there was some super cool stuff there most of it was in the unbelievably expensive price range. For those of us that don't currently breed herps (and can't therefore rationalize it as an investment) and may only have a couple hundred bucks to drop, there wasn't a hell of a lot there. Having said that I'm not complaining, I at least saw some cool stuff and came home with a new BP. In the future, considering space is limited, maybe also limit the number of tables devoted to the same species. I don't know the practical implications of that idea but it's just a thought.

wow, some nice additions there guys. i wish i was able to just bring home mutliple new animals, my mom says the gecko and the snake is enough for now :( i know i could get away with a few more geckos though, maybe another snake :P

I got 5 snakes and I wasn't even there !!! :)

2.3 cornsnakes (3 snow, 1 reverse oketee and 1 amel motley)

Simon brought the snakes to someone I know who was at the show.

I'm picking them up tomorrow. Can't wait.

"2 comments on some above replies"

1) Yes Simon is a great guy, I only got to know him from emails, but you can tell he's a quality individual.

2) Jeff, about the industry... I'm asking my self the same question.
Seems prices went down alot and that the demand is less than it was. It bugs me to have a hard time selling animals at 33% of the actual petshop sale value (i.e. leos that are sold 25$ and than can come up to 75$ in petshop). When will people start buying quality animals from private breeders ?

LOL... I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. Every show I usually say I'm no, and pretty well every show I come home with something. I think impulse buys are at their worst at shows, I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me here. Not a good thing, many of us are responsible with our impulse buys, but you know there are definteily those that aren't. Guess goes the same for even planned purchases though.

simon had all his corns 1/2 price, sure they were neonates but they were still 1/2 the price of other neonates. He even had one for free! :) (it doesn't hurt to ask)

Zoe
09-08-03, 11:37 PM
I got a couple of leos from Teresa (i only wanted one but she made me get two!). I also got to meet lots of people. Had a good time, usual!

I think sales are relatively slow because it's all corns, leos and beardies. :S
